The leaves are changing, and the temperature is dropping here in Atlanta.
Pumpkin spice is everywhere, and football commercials dominate the airwaves—official signs that Fall is in full swing.
For many, this time of year also signals that the holidays and time with family are fast approaching. While some may be looking forward to it, around this time, I inevitably hear from coaching clients who are dreading the family gatherings. This year is no exception—add in the upcoming election, and tensions may be even higher than usual.
With all that on the horizon, how can you help prepare your team for what's to come?
These tips might come in handy not just for your team but for you, too:
1. Reflect on past family gatherings and learn from them.
Think back to those moments of stress—what would’ve made them easier? Maybe it’s having a rental car so you can come and go as you please, booking your own hotel for some space away, or even arranging grocery deliveries ahead of time so that you have food that you enjoy.
2. Set your boundaries now—and repeat them often.
Start defining your boundaries today, know why these boundaries are important to you and make sure they’re clear. Keep in mind that your boundaries are not a substitute for retaliation or punishment, these are created to protect you. For example, “I’ll visit in November, but I won’t be there in December,” or “I need to make sure there’s something I can eat at dinner—who should I send my dietary restrictions to?”
3. Plan out your “breaks” in advance.
Know when you’ll need a breather and how to take it—whether that’s getting out for a fresh air, doing a quick deep breathing exercise, or just leaving the space altogether. It’s about taking care of you, and that’s not negotiable—don’t let anyone guilt you out of it.
4. Decide if you’re talking politics—or not.
The holidays come with their fair share of controversial topics, especially during election years. Be honest with yourself about your emotional and mental capacity to handle those discussions. If you’re diving in, prepare your key points. If not, that’s totally okay, too.

BONUS ?? Reconnect with the kiddos.
Whether it’s your little cousins, godchildren, or nieces and nephews—playtime with kids is a great way to reset. It’s pure joy and a quick dopamine boost, plus it helps build lasting memories for the kids too.
Leaders, Here's How You Can Support Your Team During the Holidays
While you're navigating your own challenges, remember that many of your team may be going through something similar. This time of year can be a lot for everyone, and a little extra compassion from you can go a long way.
Here are a few tangible ways you can support your team's wellbeing during the holidays:
P.S. Stop calling your employees/team a family.
The holidays don’t have to be stressful—either for you or your team. With a little preparation and a lot of empathy, you can help create a supportive environment where your team can thrive, no matter what the season brings.
