How can I prevent eye protection misting up?
Safety spectacles?and?goggles?can mist up when water vapour in the air condenses on the lens, making it difficult to see clearly.?
Learn how to select effective anti-mist eye protection below.
Why do eye protectors mist up??
?When warm air containing water vapour contacts the lens surface, it cools rapidly to its dew point, condensing as the liquid on the lens.
Goggles enclose part of the face to provide protection, causing the enclosed part of the body to retain more heat, and therefore moisture can build up quickly inside the goggle while working.?
Safety spectacle lenses can also mist up in cold environments and at high work rates. Misting can become a major problem when spectacles are worn with an item that covers the lower part of the face, directing exhaled air up toward the eyewear – for example, a medical / surgical mask, face covering, or?a poorly fitted respirator?that leaks around the face seal.
Selecting anti-mist eye protection
?To prevent moisture fogging up the lenses of safety eyewear, it is important to select an eye protector with an anti-mist coating.
Lenses marked ‘N’ pass an optional test for ‘resistance to fogging’ in EN 166, the European standard for personal eye protection. Spectacles and goggles marked ‘N’ offer reliable anti-mist performance.
N rated lenses are treated with a specialist coating designed to prevent mist forming on the lens surface, offering clear vision free from fogging.
Safety goggles with ventilation can help to prevent moisture build-up. Direct and indirect ventilation styles enable airflow to reduce moisture.?

Ventilated goggles help to reduce misting but some styles do not offer protection against other risks, such as fine dust and gas hazards, and a risk assessment must be carried out to ensure a vented goggle is appropriate for the task.?
