How can I play a role in improving accessibility, in my day-to-day work? Part 3

As many of you may know, 19 May is Global Accessibility Awareness Day. So, in the lead-up to the day, I'll be posting tips and resources, to:

  • get you thinking about accessibility
  • thinking about what you can do in your own role and work to improve accessibility
  • give you some easy starting points for improving accessibility (web and otherwise).

?This post, will build on my previous post (29 April and 3 May 2022) with a focus on what we use and what to avoid using. So, here are my next set of suggestions:

  1. ensure videos have captions and a transcript available. It's also good for the videos to have an Auslan interpreter
  2. avoid using terms such as "here is", "read more" or "click here" etc, as they are not inclusive. Rather use terms such as, "following", "select" or similar.
  3. avoid using pdfs and to an extent, PowerPoints

  • avoid using pdfs and to an extent, PowerPoints.

Video accessibility:

Ensuring reference information is inclusive (ie. links etc)

Refer to the following Web Content Accessibility Guidelines with regard to the use of links:

PDF's and PowerPoint accessibility

?There are so many ways to improve the accessibility of our work but start small. Choose three areas (or a number you're comfortable with) to focus on. Then add on more when you're ready. Think of accessibility and inclusion as a journey.
