Anyone in a leadership position is striving to be seen as the person who is in control, on top of things, and having the answers. But as leaders, we need to remember that asking the right questions is just as important as having the right answers. When we reach out and ask our teams, our colleagues our clients what they need, what’s holding them back, how we can help them, we are open to receiving insights about how we can be of more value. We are here to leverage our unique value and to empower those around us to do the same. Cultivating this process begins with open communication.
You may be thinking: “I’m accessible to my teams and clients – if they need anything they know they can come to me.“ Even though that is the case, often people need to be approached before they feel comfortable enough to share (especially with someone they view as a superior), so initiating the dialog is very helpful in opening up lines of communication. When communication is open, ideas and input can flow freely and collaboration is easier, which fosters a culture of sharing, innovation and collective efforts.
When people feel included, valued and heard they are empowered to share their value – and that creates more value. The contributions of everyone is what makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts.
