How can I ethically use AI in my writing?

Day 19 of 30 Bestselling Book Tips for Writing Your Life Story

Artificial Intelligence (AI) wasn’t available when I wrote my first book so I didn’t have to grapple with the questions about whether or not it was useful or ethical.? However, during the writing of my second book as well as these blog posts, AI has been tremendously valuable for me.? I believe that AI is only as good or evil as the human who is prompting it.? It can enhance creativity and improve efficiency, but it can also undermine the intellectual work of your craft and the skills you need to be a good writer.

One of the foundational principles of ethical AI use is transparency. If you use AI to generate content, edit, or even brainstorm ideas, it's important to be upfront about it. Readers appreciate honesty, and disclosing your use of AI can build trust. For example, if you use AI to draft sections of your book or articles, consider adding a note or acknowledgment about how AI contributed to your work.

For me, I give very specific prompts to AI and ask it to give me back some content.? Then I take that content and I use it as inspiration to write my ideas in my own voice.? For me, it’s like having a friend in the room to talk to, who understands what I am thinking and can reflect back to me a conversation that helps me keep moving forward at a steady pace.? I find it has been really helpful in decreasing the amount of time I spend in writers block.

AI should complement, not replace, your unique voice and creativity. AI can help with research, grammar checks, or generating ideas, but the core ideas and personal touch should come from you. This approach preserves the authenticity of your work and ensures that it remains a true reflection of your thoughts and style.? It’s also important to verify facts and sources independently. AI tools can sometimes generate content based on outdated or incorrect information. Always cross-check any facts, statistics, or references that AI tools provide. This helps with the accuracy of your writing and your credibility as a writer.

By treating AI as a learning partner, you can enhance your writing abilities while maintaining ethical standards.? Remember, AI is a tool to aid your creativity, not replace it.

Thank you Gabrielle! Since launching our AI work group 2 years ago, I have learned that authors and content creators can use generative AI for countless productivity gains. ?? At the same time, please be aware: If you are writing a book or submitting anything to Tier 1 publications (such as The Economist, Vogue, HBR, or FastCompany), proceed with caution. AI generated content is NOT copyright protected and editors require me to prove that my content is 100% original. Since this industry changes rapidly, consult with your IP attorney for the latest updates. I put a clause at the bottom of my articles to let my readers know that I only post original content.
