Hey there,?
It's McKayla, your Oyster Mail messenger here ?? Can you believe it’s already Q4? October is mental health awareness month, and, as the year draws to a close, we hope you’re taking extra care of yourselves and each other.?
We know this is often easier said than done, especially when stress at work can feel like it’s baked into the everyday experience. But, as research shows, mental well-being at work is a critical component of overall well-being.?
ADP’s People at Work 2024 report found that half of global workers experience stress at work, with 15% saying they work in “high-stress” environments. According to the experts, working in these environments can negatively impact our relationships with friends, family, and colleagues.?
Here’s what to keep in mind for better wellbeing at work.?
Mind your managers ??
Middle managers continue to be the most at-risk cohort for stress, overwhelm, and burnout at work, and it’s clear why.
These folks are often on the frontlines of employee training, performance management, strategic goal setting, interpersonal dynamics, and meetings — lots (and lots) of meetings.?
So how are People leaders addressing the middle manager burnout crisis? According to Gartner , People leaders see manager training and leadership development as their top priority going into 2025. Does that ring true for your HR teams?
With less than 40% of managers receiving any type of formal manager training, this could help bridge the gap for new and experienced managers, though thin resources and toxic leadership are still factors to watch.?
Don’t rule out the power of flexible working ?
Flexible working continues to be one of the most accessible and sustainable ways workplaces can support employees who are often managing families, caregiving responsibilities, and personal challenges.?
Experts say that flexible working increases employees' control over working hours and can help them tackle the effects of stress, burnout, and fatigue.?
With hybrid work on the rise, this shift in workplace attendance norms can help employers better meet the needs of their employees moving forward. But the major key? Leaders need to be realistic and consultative as they map their hybrid work strategies.?
?? Check out Oyster’s new Hybrid Handbook for tips on making hybrid work better.?
Policy and benefits make a difference ??
Clear workplace mental health policies and benefits can make a huge difference in how employees experience their workplace. For HR teams, it’s vital that guidance on mental health leave, workplace mental health accommodations, and any support resources are understood and documented.
And don’t discount the importance of benefits! Whether they’re receiving flexible perks or healthcare coverage, companies can show up for employees with benefits that allow them to manage their wellbeing more effectively.?
Access to platforms that provide services like online counselling, therapy, and wellness experiences can give employees an outlet to discuss challenges and learn vital stress management techniques.

October may be mental health awareness month, but workplace wellbeing is every day. Be gentle with yourselves and remember, how you feel at work impacts how you feel in life.?
Until next month, McKayla, your Oyster Mail Messenger
