From 22 March until 21 April this year, Muslims around the world will observe Ramadan in a month of fasting, prayer and reflection.?

HR professionals have a key role to play when it comes to supporting Muslim employees during Ramadan, including planning a work day around fasting and giving workers the necessary time off.?

Support fasting at work

Muslim employees who are fasting and spending evenings in prayer may need additional support and consideration from their employers. Productivity can be maintained, as long as a supportive, flexible approach is taken to help colleagues deal with the effects of fasting.

Offer flexible bank holidays

Many companies have experimented with flexible bank holidays to become more inclusive of different religions.

It's a way to help employees feel their beliefs are valued, so HR could consider introducing this into their organisation.

Consider Muslim pension options

It’s predicted a third of Muslims don’t have a pension due to a lack of Sharia-compliant pension options, according to a 2021 poll by investment adviser Islamic Finance Guru (IFG).?

HR should look at its pensions offering to see if it is Sharia-compliant.

This is when the defined contribution pension scheme does not invest money in industries such as tobacco, alcohol, gambling and weapons, and does not derive any interest (what Muslims call al-ribā – or exploitative gains).?
