How Can Hotels Embrace The Metaverse?

It’s a big question! Thankfully, Michael C. Cohen , Managing Partner at Growth Advisors International Network - GAIN , is here to give us his insights into how the metaverse and immersive technologies are inclusive innovations for travel and hospitality, and what they could mean for the guest.

In his latest blog for Duetto, Cohen looks at the pre-stay, in-stay, and post-stay benefits to the guest and the operational benefits to hotels.

“The metaverse and immersive technologies are inclusive innovations for travel and hospitality. This can open up travel experiences for people with physical disabilities, or who don't have the opportunity to travel. And there are now more touchpoints for communicating with guests pre-stay, in-stay, and post-stay,” he writes.

For operational benefits, Cohen argues: “It must be about utility, engagement, and loyalty all working together, both front and back of house, because employee retention and employee training are paramount.”

And if you’re still not convinced, because let’s be honest the hospitality industry has traditionally been a laggard in adopting new technology, Cohen leaves us with this little fact:

“The app for Meta's Oculus VR headset was the number one app download on both the Apple and Google app stores after Christmas. In 2021, Meta sold nearly 2.5 million headsets. In 2022, that figure almost tripled.

“The next generation is already living with this. The next generation of hotel guests, hotel revenue managers, hotel general managers, and more. The hotel industry needs to catch up if it wants to stay ahead.”

Hotels Must Stay In Touch With Evolving Guest Needs

Changing guest expectations, staffing shortages, and the industry’s reluctance to change are just three challenges Suzanne Swafford, CRME , SVP of Revenue Management at Tishman Hotel Corporation believes the hotel industry should consider as they plan for 2023.

The US-based hotel owner/operator Tishman has a track record for developing and managing premier large-scale hospitality assets in major markets. Some of the Tishman portfolio includes three Walt Disney World resorts, The Westin New York at Times Square, and Hilton Garden Inn Lake Buena Vista.

“Hotels have always been slow to change, but today’s consumer is looking for unique and individual experiences. Hotels must stay in touch with evolving guest needs and be ready to move quickly as those dynamics change,” Swafford advises.
