How can climate change control create new jobs in the Energy Sector

The world of work is connected to the natural environment. Climate change can cause a major impact on the world of work and its productivity, and this impact is only set to increase in the coming decades. Not only is this change bad for the planet and the environment, but it could also be detrimental to your career. Or could this mean the creation of new sustainable career opportunities???

The transition to the green economy will inevitably involve destruction of some jobs, but at the same time, the creation of new ones. The ILO (International Labour Organization) estimates that about 100 million new jobs can potentially be created by 2030, leading to a net job creation of 25 million jobs.?

An IEA report predicts the creation of 17 million new jobs on a net basis in areas such as electric vehicle and wind turbine manufacturing, solar panel installation and the construction of clean energy plants.??

Projected job creation in different countries in the green economy?

Adaptation measures can lead to larger creation of jobs than the loses.??

  1. Evidence suggests that in Europe around 500,000 additional jobs (approximately 0.2 per cent of the working population) will be directly and indirectly created by 2050 because of the increase in adaptation-related activities.?
  2. For every US$ 1 million invested in the construction sector, close to 650 jobs are expected to be created in India, 200 in China, 160 both in Brazil and in Indonesia, and 120 in the Russian Federation.??
  3. Sweden is working out a plan to help India to implement Article Six of the Paris Agreement to meet its net-zero emissions target before 2070 by collaborating in the heavy industries sector, mainly steel and cement.?
  4. India’s green industry is expected to add 3.7 billion jobs by 2025 to the current 18.5 million.??

What are some measures to be taken to control climate change???

Adaptation to climate change is a challenge that calls for action right now. Some of the measures that can be taken to ensure the protection of workers as well as create new jobs are-??

  • Investment in the construction field?

This is likely to have positive effects on the employment front because first and foremost, the construction field will always be in demand, and when it comes to moving towards a more sustainable future, the demand for construction work in projects reducing climate-related risks will increase.??

  • Investment in infrastructure that conserves water?

Three out of four jobs worldwide are heavily dependent on water. Taking some effective measures for the conservation, treatment, and supply of water will not only help in the creation of more jobs but also increase the quality of jobs created.??

  • Reforestation and afforestation?

Forests regulate water flows and act as barriers against storms and protect against mudslides from happening. This helps a great deal with many ecosystem services provided by forests, preserving and creating jobs.???

  • Skills development?

By providing the right training to obtain the right skills, displaced workers can be moved to sectors where there is employment growth.??

  • Social protection policies?

This is another important form of adaptation to climate change. By 2030, extended social transfers are expected to lead to an increase in employment rates of 0.2 per cent in developed countries and 0.6 per cent in developing countries.?

As the goal of achieving net-zero powers is contributing to the growth of the energy sector, here are some careers to look forward to-??

1. Clean energy engineer?

Companies that are built around oil, gas and coal always require and employ n number of technicians and engineers.??

Greener versions of these jobs are increasingly on offer in the green energy sector. Companies have been increasingly specializing in hydroelectric power, biofuels, wind turbines and solar photovoltaics.??

  • The solar photovoltaics sector currently employs 3.9 million people, and this number is projected to increase to 6.6 million by 2030.??
  • Wind power generation sector employment could be employing almost up to 5 million workers by 2030.??
  • Solar panel installers and turbine technicians will be among the fastest growing occupations in the U. S by 2031. Solar project managers, Solar O &M technicians are some in demand jobs expected to grow.??

?

2. Green builders?

There has been an increased adoption and use of natural and environmentally friendly building material and methods of construction, to reduce overall carbon emissions. Builders with skills to build greener homes and offices using smart technology are the ones that will be in demand in the future.??

The ILO predicts that there will be?6.5 million jobs in sustainable construction by 2030, making it the second-fastest growth sector behind clean energy.?

?

3. Fashion and furniture engineers?

Our future economy will depend on reusing, repairing, refurbishing, remaking and repurposing – this transformation will create new kinds of creative and purposeful jobs. Sustainable fashion and furniture designers will be in high demand. The ILO predicts creation of about 6 million jobs in the field.??

?

4. New age farmer?

Vertical farming will be using a combination of innovative architecture and latest agricultural technology with AI’s help to grow crops. Green roof gardens and farms will not only insulate building beneath, soak up rainfall, and improve air quality but will also create many jobs.??

?

5. Sustainability officer or consultant??

Green jobs of the future are going to be especially important in all sectors and not just the sustainable sectors. As a sustainability officer or consultant, you will help in transforming business models, ways to reduce a company’s energy and water use, emissions and waste, etc.??

Carbon analysts are also one of the in-demand growing professionals.??

Some of the other profiles that would be in demand are-??

  • PCB design engineers?
  • E-waste managers?
  • Hydrogen project managers?

?

Growth of energy sector in India?

In India, Renewables are expected to account for 30% of total jobs, followed by green construction at 18% and climate change at 15%.??

The country will be witnessing a huge surge in demand for EV, autonomous and connected vehicles, increasing the demand for skilled workers.??

  • L&T is looking to increasingly employ individuals in roles in design/ design for sustainability (e.g., green buildings, renewables, circularity, etc.), business development, R&D, project management, operation, ESG, sustainability and production.?
  • MG Motor India employs around 20% of its workforce in green jobs, which is expected to grow many-fold by 2030.?

The clean energy sector is predicted to grow by more than 36% between 2024 and 2025, with the bulk of new jobs being added in the solar energy and climate change segments. The green hydrogen sector is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 20% during 2025-30 with the help of government investments and initiatives like National green hydrogen mission.??

?

Green energy sector is the future!?

Climate change control measures will be generating a ton of new job opportunities within the energy sector. The major shift towards renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, will generate a major demand in skilled workers in the manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and research and development fields. These jobs will hugely contribute to mitigating climate change but also foster economic growth, innovation, and a sustainable future for generations to come.?
