How can Ai be used in our industry?
We’ve all heard the constant talks about AI taking over 'proceedings' but what does that actually mean for the architectural industry?
Traditionally, architectural workflows have been defined by extensive labour which involved large drawing boards, layout pad, scale rulers and iterative design cycles. We rely on client collaboration, extensive data research, and manual sketching from the conception stage to the final presentation. While this status quo has proved effective time and time again, it often requires a significant time commitment and can sometimes limit opportunities for design and experimentation.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to reshape the architectural landscape, with platforms like Midjourney leading the charge in revolutionising design processes. From generating creative solutions to design problems, to aiding in the conceptualisation and ideation stages, Midjourney streamlines workflows and enhances creativity for architects, simply through the power of text, this then allows the ability to explore diverse architectural styles, spatial configurations, and material choices as well as quickly iterate through design iterations, allowing for rapid exploration of ideas and concepts.
With the use of immersive visualisation and interactive design tools, MidJourney facilitates seamless collaboration and communication with clients and stakeholders through. By leveraging augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies, architects can provide clients with immersive experiences that bring designs to life. This enhances client engagement, fosters greater understanding and appreciation of design concepts, and facilitates informed decision-making. MidJourney's intuitive interface and user-friendly features enable clients to actively participate in the design process, ensuring that their vision and preferences are incorporated into the final design.
However, integrating AI-powered technologies brings up some crucial issues, such as moral dilemmas and the need to strike a balance between productivity and innovation.
These issues also include discrimination in design, rights to privacy, intellectual property, transparency, fair access and more. It’s really important that collaboration within the industry between technologists, architects, policymakers, and stakeholders is necessary to address these difficulties.?
Can architects utilise AI's promise while maintaining ethical norms in architectural practice by placing a high priority on justice, openness, and responsibility?
At the end of the day - Midjourney is a powerful tool that could potentially be incorporated in a concept design process and aid architects, design teams and their client to creatively and easily visualise projects. It can provide limitless design inspiration and iterations and we’re excited to see how this revolutionary platform will change the way we operate in this landscape.
We’ve been having some fun at Studio 16a experimenting with different parameters; the mini brief was in keeping with today: Pancake day.
We had a brief masterclass on how to write our Midjourney prompts and decided to have a little fun - time to unleash our creativity, some might say craziness...

Here are playful design concepts, made with Midjourney by us here at 16a; whose design concept do you like the most?
We’d love to hear your thoughts on artificial intelligence and Mid journey!
Woah, the pictures came out great! ??
Innovative and playful approaches like this showcase the potential for AI to not only streamline processes but also to inspire new forms of creativity in architectural design.
