How Will California's New Privacy Legislation Affect Your Brand?

Nothing like starting with a million-dollar question. Literally.
I figured if you're going to begin a newsletter, you want to capture readers' attention and at least attempt to demonstrate the value of subscribing right away.
In Digital Marketing Trends (the series course I created for LinkedIn Learning), I've been posting videos about recent digital and social media changes and developments, and how they might affect marketers and communicators.
You'll find the content organized around the following four themes:
- Mobile and Video
- Social, Apps, and Ads
- The I in AI
- Privacy and Data
Now, we're bringing the conversation to a fortnightly newsletter (h/t Ann Handly).
And we're starting with Privacy and Data.
Introducing the CCPA: North America's First Comprehensive Privacy Act
If you haven't heard about the California Consumer PrivacyAct, you should probably look into it sooner—rather than later.
Similar to the EU's GDPR, or General Data Protection Regulations, the CCPA puts privacy and personal data controls into the hands of the consumer, which is really where they belong.
It came into effect in January 2020 and affects brands based in California and organizations that conduct business there.
Essentially, you need to offer consumers an easy way to opt-out of data collection. You also need to protect people's personal data.
And your brand must comply with the CCPA if you meet any of the following three criteria:
- Your gross revenue is greater than $25 million a year.
- You collect, sell, or share personal information on 50,000 or more individuals.
- Your company makes 50% or more of its revenue by selling people's personal information.
How will CCPA alter your marketing plans?

5 年Nice work on the newsletter, Martin. What's key about CCPA and the other 10 or so state legislatures bringing similar regulations to life is: the very same requirements to comply with these laws is what brands have to do to deliver personalized experiences/content, reduce their media spend and get to finally KNOW their customers.?
