How To Calculate Fabric Consumption For Trouser

How To Calculate Fabric Consumption For Trouser

The trouser is a common garment manufacturing item in the apparel industry. Knitted trousers can be made from fleece fabric or a single jersey. The process for calculating fabric consumption for trousers is the same for both fabric types, but we will focus on fleece fabric in this discussion. As previously mentioned, fabric costs account for almost 60% of the total manufacturing cost of the garment product.

In today's discussion, we will focus on the process of calculating fabric consumption for knitted trousers, using an example to illustrate the process. Fabric consumption is a routine task for garment merchandisers. In cases where CAD systems are not available, merchandisers may need to manually calculate fabric consumption. To better understand the calculation process, please refer to the formula and example provided below:

Find the below formula, which we will use to calculate the fabric consumption for knitted trousers;?

Formula - 01: In centimeter?

{(IL + Allowance + CFR + Allowance + WBW + Allowance) x (HTC + Allowance)} x 4 x GSM / 10,000 x 1000 + 10% (Wastage and extra cutting) x Doz.?

Where,?

IL = Inseam Length?
CFR = Center front rise?
WBW = Waist Belt Width?
HTC = Half-Thigh Circum?

Formula - 02: In Inch?

{(IL + Allowance + CFR + Allowance + WBW + Allowance) x (HTC + Allowance)} x 4 x GSM / 1550 x 1000 + 10% (Wastage and extra cutting) x Doz.?

For better understanding, we will practice both options. First of all, we need below information to calculate fabric consumption;?

  • Fabric GSM of the garment?
  • Garment measurement sheet?
  • Cutting and sewing allowance?

For calculating the fabric consumption of trousers, we will do separately;?

  1. Fabric consumption for the body?
  2. Fabric consumption for pocket?
  3. Total consumption of the garment?

Formula - 01: If garment measurement uses in CM (Centimeter)?

Suppose, the knitted fleece trouser has been following information. Now we will calculate the fabric consumption based on the below information measurement;?

Item: Knitted fleece fabric, fabric GSM (Gram per square) is 260.

Measurement without allowance with allowance

Inseam (IL)70.2 cm= 70.2 + 3 = 73.2 cm front Rise (CFR)23.70 cm= 23.70 + 3 = 26.7 cm waistband height3.50 cm= 3.50 + 3 = 6.5 cm? Thigh (HTC)34.70 cm= 34.7 + 3 = 37.7 cm

As per the above measurement of this style, the body fabric consumption is;?

(IL + CFR + WBW) x ?HTC x 4 x GSM / 10,000 x 1000 + 10% (Wastage and extra cutting) x Doz.?
= (73.2 + 26.7 + 6.5) x 37.7 x 4 x 260 / 10,000 x 1000 + 10% x 12?
= 5.507 kg / Doz.

Measurement without allowance with allowance

Pocket Length13 cm= 13 + 3 = 16 cmPocket Width12.5 cm= 12.5 + 3 = 15.5 cm

As per the above measurement of this style, the pocket fabric consumption is;?

= Pocket Length x Pocket Width x 4 x GSM / 10,000 x 1000 + 10% (Wastage and extra cutting) x Doz.?
= 16 x 15.5 x 4 x 260 / 10,000 x 1000 + 10% x 12?
= 0.340 kg / Doz.?

Note: We calculated pocket fabric consumption based on shell fabric.?

So, as per the above consumption of this style, the total fabric consumption for hoodie sweatshirt is;?

Body fabric consumption + Pocket fabric consumption?
= 5.507 + 0.340 kg / Doz.?
= 5.847 kg / Doz.?

We need a total of 5.847 kg per Doz. to complete the garment of knitted trousers.?

Formula - 02: If garment measurement is used in Inch?

Suppose the knitted fleece trousers have been following information. Now, we will calculate the fabric consumption based on the below information measurement;?

Item: Knitted fleece fabric, fabric GSM (Gram per square) is 260.

Measurement without allowance with allowanceInseam

(IL)27.64 inch= 27.64 + 2 = 29.64 inch front Rise (CFR)9.33 inch= 9.33 + 2 = 11.33 inch waistband height1.38 inch= 1.38 + 2 = 3.38 inch? Thigh (HTC)13.66 inch= 13.66 + 2 = 15.66 cm

As per the above measurement of this style, the body fabric consumption is;?

(IL + CFR + WBW) x ?HTC x 4 x GSM / 1550 x 1000 + 10% (Wastage and extra cutting) x Doz.?
= (29.64 + 11.33 + 3.38) x 15.66 x 4 x 260 /1550 x 1000 + 10% x 12?
= 6.15 kg / Doz.

Measurement without allowance with allowancePocket

Length5.12 inch= 5.12 + 2 = 7.12 inch pocket Width4.92 inch= 4.92 + 2 = 6.92 inch

As per the above measurement of this style, the pocket fabric consumption is;?

= Pocket Length x Pocket Width x 4 x GSM / 1550 x 1000 + 10% (Wastage and extra cutting) x Doz.?
= 7.12 x 6.92 x 4 x 260 / 1550 x 1000 + 10% x 12?
= 0.44 kg / Doz.?

Note: We calculated pocket fabric consumption based on shell fabric.?

So, as per the above consumption of this style, the total fabric consumption for hoodie sweatshirt is;?

Body fabric consumption + Pocket fabric consumption?
= 6.15 + 0.44 kg / Doz.?
= 6.59 kg / Doz.?

We need 6.59 kg per Doz. to complete the knitted trousers garment.?

A CAD marker is the best option for estimating aetheric consumption. B of a garment and estimating its accuracy, but sometimes, we need to calculate fabric consumption manually if a CAD marker is not available.
