How can you design public services that best serve residents? This is something we’ve been exploring with towns and cities across Armenia, Georgia, and Moldova, as part of the?Urban Imaginaries programme, which we’re delivering alongside?UNDP. As part of this, we’ve been introducing them to complexity-informed approaches like human-centred design and sensemaking, to help teams develop place-based solutions to local challenges?with?and?for?residents.

For the municipality team in C?l?ra?i, Moldova, by listening to residents, they have been able to establish that the improvement of urban waste management services is a key priority for their community. Taking a design thinking approach and holding discovery interviews with residents has also enabled the team to better understand the challenges around this service and how that has been impacting residents.?

More fundamentally, the programme is helping the team in C?l?ra?i to reorient their relationship with residents and their role in public service.?

For C?l?ra?i, the next step is to design experiments to help test some of the solutions they have devised, based on their conversations with residents. There are many other exciting stories from across the Urban Imaginaries programme, of teams that are applying their learning to reimagine the cities of tomorrow - we look forward to sharing more soon!
