How ButterflyMX Fosters Healthy Team Building in a Remote Work Environment

A healthy company culture is key to providing great service to customers. And the easiest way to guarantee a healthy company culture is by encouraging collaboration and team building — across all teams. But in the modern age, with most workers working from home at least one day per week, it can be hard to get people together. As a result, ‘water cooler’ chats have become a thing of the past!

So, how can you become a true member of the team when you only see your team members in person a handful of times per year??

Here at ButterflyMX, we’ve found a great way to facilitate relationship-building for remote workers, because we’re no strangers to the struggles of team building despite physical distance.?

In fact, at ButterflyMX, we’re a primarily remote workforce. And while each of our teams gets together several times a year for a few days of in-office work, we spend most of our time communicating from states away. Meanwhile, one of our core values as a company is to “be collaborative.” So, how do we foster a truly collaborative work environment when each employee is working from their own home office??

One way we’ve encouraged remote collaboration and remote team building is through unique and engaging team-building activities.?

Most recently, hosted an engraving class via Zoom. Participants were sent kits containing the tools to engrave as well as several items to add personalization and flair to. These items included a water bottle, four glass coasters, a key chain, and more. Attendees were given a number of unique patterns to trace and were also invited to freehand designs if they felt inclined to do so!

But that’s not the only creative virtual community activity we’ve hosted. In fact, ButterflyMX hosts a new, different team-building activity every month.?

Previous community events have included team trivia hosted by members of the ButterflyMX community. Participants were split into trivia teams with members of other company teams to put their trivia knowledge to the test. This activity was a great way to meet and work with new coworkers in a fun, exciting environment. Attendees got to flex their expertise on niche subjects while becoming acquainted with coworkers they’d likely never interacted with before.

One seasonally themed event that many members of ButterflyMX cite as one of their favorites was the fall candle-making community event. With the guidance of a professional candle maker, members assembled a fall-scented candle in the shape of a warm cup of hot cocoa.?

So, not only did community members get to take a break from the busy work day to do something fun, but they were left with an adorable piece of decoration to remind them of the great times they had with their coworkers.

Do tactile activities grab your attention but you wish you were left with a sweet treat in the end? Maybe our cookie decorating event entices you. In this activity, participants were sent a kit of several premade sugar cookies ready to be decorated with colorful icing sugar. ButterflyMXers loved sharing photos of the swirls, stars, and nautical stripes they adorned their cookies with before chowing down on the delicious concoction.?

In addition to these community-building events, our team members have been invited to build their own butterfly gardens, plant an array of succulents, and attend musical bingo. But no matter what the activity is, here at ButterflyMX, we’ve discovered that the fun lies in getting members of the community together to sit back, relax, and try out a new hobby or skill with their coworkers.?

Being a remote workforce doesn’t mean we put team building on the back burner. In fact, by doing the opposite and putting community building at the center of our company philosophy, we’ve created a team of close-knit coworkers who are happy every time they get a chance to work together.?
