Bulking is not just about not watching what you eat and eating anything. High-calorie foods hit targets easily but eating nothing but junk is wrong. Not getting proper nutrients in bulking, will not make the bulk successful. This is because you will not be able to lift the weight that you need to. Eating junk food will make you feel terrible and weaker in lifting weights. Also, it’s likely most junk food is fat and carbs, so you need more protein.
On the other hand, eating whole foods when bulking is much better. This is because you get the energy you need to lift heavy weights and grow. Also, whole foods are easier to eat as you don’t feel bad after eating. This is because the body can easily digest it and it gets more nutrients. Thus, only go for supplements when busy and eat many whole foods.
Another mistake with bulking is not hitting the protein target. This typically happens from bulking with junk food that has a ton of fat. So what you need to do is consistently eat protein throughout the day. Otherwise, you must eat a lot of protein in one sitting which is tough.
People should also not bulk for too long, like for 6 months at a time. This is because it’s much easier to bulk when you take diet breaks. Also, bulking too long gets the metabolism too used to high calories. Thus, bulks may not be effective when the body treats it as the norm.
It’s also a mistake to be too strict on the weighing scale when bulking. This is because sometimes your weight is just lower due to the water. Sometimes then, you lose weight not due to muscle but due to water. Then, the scale should not be the only indicator of success for bulking. Weighing scales are flawed since it may not track specific lean mass.
Another mistake with this is thinking you gained muscle but it’s just fat. This then is harmful to muscle as you have to cut the fat which loses muscle. So bulking and focusing too much on weight can just cause fat gain. Therefore, people have to measure body fat as they weigh themselves. One way of properly determining body fat is through the calipers. Another way of measuring fat accurately is by measuring your waist.
