How the built environment can help with healthcare capacity and workforce issues.

The built environment can play a big role in helping to ease the strain on our healthcare system and workforce. By creating resilient spaces that can absorb abnormal levels of use and adapt to changing needs, we can help to ensure that our healthcare system is able to cope with the demands placed on it. Additionally, by creating workplaces that are comfortable and convenient for our workforce, we can help to increase engagement and productivity.

In this article, we'll take a closer look at these issues and explore how the built environment can help to address them.

How the built environment can help with healthcare capacity issues

One of the biggest challenges facing our healthcare system is capacity. With more people living longer and the population continuing to grow, the demand for healthcare services is increasing. This has led to a situation where our healthcare system is struggling to keep up with demand.

With the current climate of high demand, aging infrastructure and rising energy costs it is difficult for healthcare providers to maintain services without adequate funding.

A winter meltdown could be imminent due in part by an increasingly elderly population combined with COVID-19 infections which have created a critical state; add this all up plus poor capital management over decades means that our hospital buildings are quickly becoming unusable.

We need ideas now more than ever before--we must think outside traditional political boundaries if we want any hope at sustainability during these times where resources will continue decreasing year after year

One way that the built environment can help ease this pressure is by creating resilient spaces that can adapt to changing needs.

Resilient spaces are designed to be able to absorb abnormal levels of use and still function effectively. This means that they can be used for a variety of purposes, including as temporary hospitals or care facilities during times of high demand. By creating more resilient spaces, we can help to ensure that our healthcare system is able to cope with spikes in demand.

How the Built Environment Can Help With Workforce Issues

Another challenge facing healthcare today is managing, attracting and retaining skilled talent.

In order to attract top talent, institutions need to offer workplaces that are comfortable and convenient for their employees. Long hours and demanding work schedules can make it difficult for employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Hospitals are in turmoil. The staff have been shocked by a recent pay dispute with the government, which has led to an increase of pressure on jobs that simply do not pay enough for people's everyday lives - especially when energy costs continue rise each year.

What if we tried making our work environment more comfortable?

What would happen then. A well designed space can really empower individuals from various walks-of life; whether you're looking into join the profession and provide assistance when we all need it.

By creating workplaces that are designed with employee wellbeing in mind, healthcare can help their employees feel more engaged and productive. Well-designed workplaces should be convenient for employees so that they can easily fit their work into their personal lives. They should also be stable so that employees feel secure in their roles. When employees feel comfortable and engaged in their work, everyone benefits.

This is where the built environment can help.

The built environment plays a vital role in supporting our healthcare system and workforce. By creating resilient spaces that can adapt to changing needs, we can help ease the pressure on our healthcare system.

Additionally, by creating workplaces that are comfortable and convenient for our workforce, we can help businesses attract and retain top talent. These are just some of the ways that the built environment can help solve some of the biggest challenges facing our society today.

Healthcare in the UK needs innovation.

The way we communicate, seek advice, and receive medical care has changed dramatically in the last 40 years, so why are many of the facilities we use been built in the 1980s/90s and not upgraded to what is required for today?

Budgetary cuts, changing governments with short term agendas has meant the NHS has been working with huge constraints and a huge estate to manage with little or no budgets. This means they’re firefighting, picking the next ‘we needed this yesterday’ item on the list to tackle.

If Covid has taught us anything it’s the agility and ability to have environments that adapt which is key to continuing to deliver care in the most exceptional circumstances.

If we expect our healthcare system to survive another 40yrs then we need to innovate our ways of delivering services, reduce waiting list, wait times, and bringing options to market which put the patient at the centre of care and taking action with the long-term vision in mind.

Cfes believe this is paramount to tackling much of what calculates to £2billion worth in under-utilised space, in efficient systems and generally not a place where specialist care professionals can deliver world-class care.

We are a healthcare environment specialist.

Bringing innovation to the industry has been at the centre of what we do, delivering from concept to live-operation and ongoing facilities support.

Believing healthcare can be delivered better if the environments are fit for purpose and future proofed.

With 40-years’ experience, delivering over £200million worth of facilities and working with both private and NHS trusts means we deliver on the estate’s needs, up and down the country, to all Health Department Standards while maintaining a focus on the care being delivered.

We understand that the environment in which care is delivered is just as important as the care itself. We're experts in healthcare environments, and we're here to help make sure your facility is fit for purpose - and future proofed.

Delivering better healthcare environments.
