How To Build Your Self-Confidence
When thinking too far ahead the mind can start to process too much information and this can make you doubt your abilities and potentially lower your self confidence depending on the situation you are thinking about!
Say for example you need to prepare a talk for 100+ delegates and this is the first time presenting. What will be going through your mind?
Maybe.....
Can I do it?, What will they think of me?, There will be so many people there, They have so much more knowledge and expertise than I do, I don't think I can do it.
We have all been there at some point. Drawing from my personal experiences, below are some recommendations to condition the mind to deal with a difficult situation where you may doubt your confidence.
Always remember to be generous to yourself. Learn to accept compliments graciously..accept and believe them!!
Tell yourself your good points EVERYDAY!!
Compliment yourself if you have done something well even if no one else has commented.
If you make a mistake, forgive yourself..say "that was a silly thing to do, I won't do it again". NOT "I am really stupid".
Always look for the positive in every situation. If you adopt a positive approach, people around you will start to react in a positive way to you.
In difficult situations, don't get bogged down. Try to break major problems down into manageable chunks and tackle them one by one...in a business like way.
Remember...BEHAVIOUR BREEDS BEHAVIOUR...so if you are positive and cheerful, strangers, friends and colleagues will be too.
Always relax at some point each day. Try to make a few minutes each day, to be quiet, to clear your mind and de-stress your body. You will need to practice releasing tension and deep breathing until you can do them at will!.
And always be self-motivating. Don't rely on other people's opinions to feel good about yourself. Many of us need praise from others to feel good about ourselves...if you rely on this, it can catch you out!
Your own willpower has brought you to where you are today. Enjoy the present!

4 年Well, this is most interesting, Sanjay Nadarajah. I so much agree with Ipek Williamson, that living in the moment gives us the most peace, awareness and tranquility. But I also believe that having the ability to foresee certain outcomes, with intuition and reasoning, also offers a sense of peace. It means that you may have the wisdom of reason, the gift of observation, the understanding of how one thing might lead to another. With that is a sense of holding your own future in your hands, allowed to stay positive with any safeguards if what may be to come doesn't align so much with your ability to reach your goals or hold your values. It allows a certain preparation that reduces stress, for me anyway. When we have awareness of that, we are not being controlled. Without control, we are free, with freedom, we are responsible for our own actions, our achievement and even our transgressions. WE don't need to rely on other's opinions or gratuitous gestures to feel good about ourselves. When we are good, we know it. When we are bad, we know it. Deep down. And we are never fooling our Maker. Enjoy the freedom to live in the moment, with awareness of past and future, for ourselves and others, fully, without bad Karma.
