How to Build a Winning Team

How to Build a Winning Team

Free Resource – Here’s Your “Winning Team” Checklist

Investing in Your Team

A few weeks ago, I wrote about where to invest your time, energy, and money to grow your business. You can find all four areas here.

It starts with investing in your people.

As a business owner, if you have a great team that takes exceptional care of your customers, growth comes naturally – it’s like you’re a pilot flying with a tailwind. Customers love doing business with you, so they refer their friends and come back more often, giving you a more profitable business. On the other hand, bad hires, a lack of accountability, poor training, unclear communication, and employee churn all create significant headwinds to fight against.

By focusing on repeatable processes and systems, a smart business owner can hire fewer people, pay them more, and come out way ahead of their competitors.

Investing in your people is one of the best ways to grow your business, but it can be hard to know where to start. That’s where the “Winning Team” checklist comes in.

  • Answer each question with a YES or NO
  • Highlight everything you’d like to get done in the next 12 months
  • Pick one thing you’ll get started on either building or improving right away
  • Let me know what it is in the comments, messages, or by email, so I can hold you accountable

“Winning Team” Checklist

  1. I have implemented a recruitment system that attracts high quality candidates
  2. I have a documented system for onboarding new team members
  3. I have a systemized training program to improve team members’ skills
  4. I use behavioural style assessments for each team member, and work to their strengths
  5. The team members understand their roles and expectations
  6. Each role has been documented with a job description
  7. Each team member understands how their performance will be measured, e.g. via KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)
  8. I consistently give both positive and constructive feedback – formally (performance reviews) and informally (in the moment)
  9. Each member of the team has their own 90-day action plan
  10. I hold regular team meetings which result in accountable actions with measurable outcomes
  11. I have a system for encouraging open communication
  12. There is a system for rewarding based on performance
  13. I have an up-to-date organizational chart
  14. I have a future organizational chart, including positions that will be needed in the next 12-18 months

This Week’s Takeaway

Because great people like to work with other great people, investing in your team keeps paying dividends as you start to attract more and more high performers.

So what’s your next priority, that will create a nice tailwind for your business?
