HOW TO BUILD A VERY SOLID NETWORK

Today, I want to talk about the importance of being intentional with your network. You've probably heard the saying "your network is your net worth" before. But have you ever really stopped to evaluate the strength of your own network?

A few days ago, a friend and I had a thought-provoking conversation about the importance of being intentional about the people in your network. Your network can play a significant role in your success, and it’s essential to be deliberate about whom you have in your corner.

Let me ask you a question: if you were in a tough situation and needed a certain amount of money, could you confidently list 5 to 10 people in your network who would come to your aid? If you struggle to draw up a list, then it's time to be more intentional about building a stronger network.

Here’s the thing, everyone should have three categories of people in their network: those below you whom you support, those on the same level with whom you collaborate, and those above you that are able to boost your career. However, if you’re like most people, you might find that you have plenty of contacts in the first two categories (people below you that you support and people on the same level with you that you collaborate with), but very few in the third category - people above you that are able to boost your career

If this sounds like you, then don't worry, I've got you covered.

Here are some practical tips and strategies for building and nurturing a strong professional network:

  1. Be Clear About Your Networking Goals:?Be specific about your networking goals. Identify the type of people you want in your network and the specific benefits they can offer. This clarity will make it easier for you to seek out and connect with the right people.
  2. Get?Out?of?Your?Comfort?Zone: it’s essential to get out of your comfort zone and meet new people. Attend networking events, join professional groups on LinkedIn, and attend industry conferences. You never know whom you might meet, and it could be the beginning of a valuable connection.
  3. Be of Value to Others: Do not be a parasite in the name of networking. When you support and help others, they are more likely to do the same for you in the future. It’s a win-win situation. And when you do ask for help, be specific about what you need and how others can assist you.
  4. Leverage Social Media: LinkedIn is an excellent platform for connecting with other professionals in your industry. Be active on the platform, engage with other users' content, and don’t be afraid to reach out to people whose work you admire.
  5. Join Professional Organizations: Joining a professional organization or association in your field is an excellent way to meet like-minded people and build relationships that can benefit your career.

Wrapping Up

In conclusion, building and nurturing a strong professional network is essential for career success. Be intentional about whom you have in your corner, “your network is your net worth.”
