How to build an ultra-inspired team

When I ask leaders what they think their most important job is, they often answer that it is to motivate their teams.

When I ask why they did not hire motivated people, they are unsure what to answer.

My point: Can you motivate someone else?

The business world has made us believe that our primary job is to motivate our people as leaders.

?

I am not a very big advocate of motivation. Coaching some of the world’s most successful CEOs and leaders, I have seen that none rely on motivation, because it’s based on how you feel, and human feelings are unpredictable.

More than motivating their teams, I encourage leaders to think of building an ultra-inspired team.

?

What’s the difference, you may ask? Let me ask you something here- have you come across people who say they will do ten things and land up doing none? And then, you might also know of people who might not say anything but land up doing incredible stuff? The first set of people are those who wait for Motivation. They will do things when and if they feel good. They have to be pushed to do the things and be shown a carrot.

The second set of people is the ones who have a natural calling, which comes from deep inside of them. I am reminded of Nelson Mandela, who inspired countless people to devote their lives to peace, justice, and reconciliation.

Your job as a leader is to tap into your people’s calling because everyone has one.?

?

So here’s what you want to do :


  • Talk to your team about their deep purpose
  • Create a compelling vision for your team
  • Show gratitude regularly
  • Trust people with more responsibility
  • Allow your team to work independently
  • Help your team improve their performance
  • Make them a part of your growth and success

It takes a certain level of awareness to realize that our direction as leaders has been wrong, that the answers are not out there but in here. It’s inside every one of your employees.?

Leading people means your ability to inspire your people towards a particular goal. Only when people are so inspired to do what you want them to do will they do more than you expected.
