HOW TO BUILD TEAM CONFIDENCE

Do you every wonder why your team has trouble executing even when they are all on the same page? Then you definitely want to read the below...


Meet Alex, he's the CEO of a multinational company that operates in four countries. He's been in his role for 13 years as has a solid track record of leading growth for the company.


However, Alex has a strong competitor with a growth strategy that is threatening his market share.


He has been urging the executive teams of each country division to unite and fight their competitor together for the past two years. However, they are not working as well as he expected. They have the common symptoms of a team that lacks confidence:

  • Playing safe and not pushing through current limits.
  • Not challenging themselves and each other.
  • All talk and good (but not GREAT) action.

Alex thought that perhaps his team lacked 'trust' in each other which is a common misconception that many leaders have. Trust is a foundational factor but there's something even more important.


It's CONFIDENCE! And more importantly, TEAM CONFIDENCE.

Team confidence is the belief that each team member has in the ability of the team as a whole.


There are three levels of confidence:

  1. An individual's confidence in themselves
  2. An individual's confidence in their team members
  3. An individual's confidence in the team as a whole

All three are important, but the most important is #3.


When I evaluated Alex's country teams separately, here's what I found:

  • They had strong confidence in themselves as individuals
  • They had strong confidence in their team members
  • They had average confidence in their own country team
  • They lacked confidence in the four countries working together as a unified team

The big challenge was first to help each country team to improve their own team confidence and then improve the team confidence in the four country teams working together as a whole.

Here's what we did to address the challenge:

  1. We held a workshop with all four teams present to educate them on the topic and importance of 'team confidence'
  2. During the workshop, we worked through the factors that create and sustain team confidence
  3. We implemented a system in place to measure and track team confidence
  4. We assigned a champion from each country to: a) ensure their country's team confidence was improving b) ensure that the team confidence for all four countries working together was improving

It's been five months since the workshop, and we're seeing a steady improvement in their team confidence. Alex is also seeing a shift in their result, and it's allowing him to challenge them more without feeling like he's going to break the team.

We'll continue to monitor their team progress, and I'll be sure to keep you updated.
