How to Build a Strong foundation of Self-Confidence

Self-confidence is a superpower. Once you start to believe in yourself, the magic starts happening.

Self-confidence is a feeling of trust in your abilities, qualities, and judgment. Research suggests that confidence is very important to grow in life.

What Is Confidence?

Confidence can refer to a general sense of belief and trust in your own ability.

In everyday conversation, self-confidence is often confused with self-esteem, and it overlaps with the less well-known term “self-efficacy.” However, psychology gives each of these terms a specific definition. It’s helpful to distinguish among the three:

Self-Efficacy: It refers to your belief in your ability to accomplish?specific tasks. If you believe you’re capable of cooking dinner, this is reflective of high self-efficacy.

Self-Confidence: Self-confidence is how likely you are to accomplish a goal, especially based on your past experience.

Self-confidence and self-efficacy are both rooted in experience, but self-confidence reflects a broader view of yourself, rather than your confidence in specific tasks.

Self-Esteem: Self-esteem refers to a belief in your overall worth.

How to Be More Confident

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to increase your self-confidence. Whether you lack confidence in one specific area or struggle to feel confident about anything, these confidence boosters can help.

1. Be More Self Aware: Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

It’s really hard to not?compare yourself to others. We are humans and we have emotions and feeling consciously or subconsciously.

Try to figure out what you want to achieve and focus on your life. In short, live a purposeful life.

Discover your true self & acknowledge your core values, beliefs and strength. Be comfortable with who you are.

2. Surround Yourself With Positive People

Take a moment and think about how your friends make you feel.

Do your friends lift you up, or do they bring you down?

Are they constantly judging you, or do they accept you for who you are?

The people you spend time with can influence your thoughts and attitudes about yourself, perhaps more than you realize. So, pay attention to how others make you feel. If you feel bad about yourself after hanging out with a particular person, it may be time to say?Good Bye!

Instead, surround yourself with people who love you and want the best for you. Seek out others who are positive and can help build your confidence.

Practice Positive Self-Talk

Negative self-talk can limit your abilities and lessen your confidence by convincing your subconscious that you “can’t handle” something or that it is “too hard” and you “shouldn’t even try.

The next time you begin to think that you have no business speaking up in a meeting or that you are too out of shape to work out, remind yourself that your thoughts aren’t always accurate. Then find a way to turn those thoughts around into more Positive Self-Talk.

Here are a few examples of ways to challenge pessimistic self-talk and reframe your thoughts into a more positive way of thinking:

  • Instead of telling yourself “I can’t handle this” or “this is impossible,” try reminding yourself that “I can do this” or “all I have to do is try.”
  • Instead of telling yourself “I can’t do anything right” when you make a mistake, remind yourself “I can do better next time” or “at least I learned something.”
  • Instead of saying you “hate” public speaking, use a milder word like “don’t like” and remind yourself that everyone has strengths and weaknesses.

Challenge Your Fears Boldly & Consistently

If you’re afraid you’ll embarrass yourself or think that you’re going to mess up, try it anyway. Besides, a little self-doubt can help improve performance.12 Tell yourself it’s just an experiment and see what happens.

You might learn that being a little anxious or making a few mistakes isn’t as bad as you thought. And each time you move forward, you gain more confidence in yourself. In the end, this can help prevent you from taking risks that will result in major negative consequences.

“Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about Consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come.”
