How To Build Something Meaningful
When I was first starting out, I wish I’d known that anything worthwhile takes a long time. I wish I’d known that things would turn out okay by the time I was in my 40s. I wish I’d known enough not to be so afraid to go after what I really wanted.
But I didn’t. I thought that if I didn’t get into the one graduate school that I wanted to go to that I wouldn’t get into any. I thought that if I didn’t get into one art program that I wanted to get into, I wouldn’t get into any. And I thought that if I didn’t get the job that I really, really wanted, that I had to settle for whatever came my way otherwise I would never get a job and I’d be unemployable for the rest of my life. Which means that I would end up homeless and penniless and alone. At that time of my life I feared that I was too old, not talented enough, not smart enough—not anything enough to get what I really wanted. And I was only 30!
Looking back on this now, the fear of being infinitely unemployed was palpable. I never once considered that I was worthy of getting a job that I loved or that I was capable of living a creative life.
I’ve realized one of the biggest downfalls to our technologically driven world is the pace in which we think things should happen.? We are used to instant communication across the globe, immediate poll results, and viral sensations.? This causes us to want instant gratification in our hopes and dreams.
The problem is then compounded with living in a culture where after graduating from college you are expected to know exactly what you want to do, where you want to do it, and what your life plan will be. The culture dictates that if you aren't successful right out of the gate, there must be something wrong with you. The palpable feeling of hopelessness builds exponentially if you aren’t able to achieve something quickly.
It takes considerable effort to get the work you love and mastery of said work is a process that takes years. Be patient, take your time, and build your skills.? I’ve worked with LinkedIn to create a course all around “reinventing yourself”. If you’re stuck in a career you’re unhappy with or you’re not sure where to go from here but you know that “here” is not where you’d like to be I invite you to join me.? In this course you’ll learn:

Success is different for everyone. Just because you haven’t reached your success yet (or maybe don’t even know what that looks like) doesn’t mean you are not capable and worthy of everything you want. Perhaps it’s time to reinvent the way you think, to define who you are, and what you really, really want.? Even if what you want feels impossible I’m here to tell you that you are your biggest obstacle. And I think I can help you overcome that obstacle, because I understand how you feel.? You can start reinventing who you are right now! Not twenty years from now, not thirty years from now, not two weeks from now. Right now. I am here to help.? Building anything meaningful takes time, so let’s get started!

2 年This is such a beautiful post, Debbie. I am sure hundreds of readers would have connected with it right from word go. Backing our own selves firmly is that defining trait for professionals who think "Aah, if only I could have graduated from....XYZ School or may be "I wish I could have cracked that interview early on in my career". Our passion is always under threat if we don't tell ourselves continuously that "I am giving my best and that's the maximum one can do at a time. Thank you for sharing this awesome piece with us. More power to you!
