How to Build a Resilient Team

Resilience is a crucial skill for teams to develop in order to thrive in a world of challenges and change. Businesses now seek managers and leaders who can adapt to new situations seamlessly. In fact, it is one of the key characteristics desired in leaders today. Leaders and teams who possess characteristics such as emotional strength, adaptability and resourcefulness which help them cope with adverse situations are in demand.

How do you create a resilient team that will thrive even in adverse situations?

Manifested in many ways the skills that make up resilient individuals can be honed and developed.

Here are our 6 tips for building resilience:

1. Prioritise self care so that you are able to support others effectively

Self-care is an important part of building resilience. It helps maintain a positive mindset and better cope with stress. (check out my other blog – fix your own oxygen mask first ). By prioritising self-care, employees can better support others in their workplace. In fact, a study by the Health and Safety Executive found that poor mental health costs UK employers up to £45 billion each year. Can you afford not to look after your employees mental health?

2. Learn to say 'No'

Knowing when to say ‘no’ is crucial to preserving energy and resources. It is essential to recognise when taking on more work that it might well lead to burn out or a reduced level of productivity. Workers reporting work related stress or anxiety is on the rise and this can ripple through teams reducing their resilience and effectiveness.

3. Build trusted relationships

Building trusted relationships will provide a support network providing the emotional support that individuals need to overcome challenges. Isolation at work can reduce feelings of resilience and the CIPD state that their research shows up to 32% of UK employees don’t feel they have relationships they can rely on at work.

4. Create a connected network

A great network can help individuals become more resourceful enabling them to draw on a range of skills and knowledge to find solutions to challenges. Diversity is a key part of this and including breadth within teams and networks will make it more likely they will outperform their peers.

5. Practise positivity and presence

Practising positivity and presence is crucial to overcoming negative thoughts. It helps individuals maintain a positive outlook and remain focused on their goals.

6. Manage your internal dialogue

Understanding and exploring your thoughts about your own abilities is essential to building resilience enabling individuals to recognise their strengths and identify areas where they need to develop.
