How to build real relationships at work: Establishing stronger contact

Last week Indr? Kontaut? Kontaute gave away some useful tips on Breaking the Ice at a new workplace (check it out here). But meeting new people and talking to them just once isn’t enough. Building relationships at work is a little bit longer process..:)?

So what to do when you already met the person, but you still don't know each other well enough?

Step #2: Turn “Hey” into “Hey again.”

Everything is uncomfortable the first time you try it. But, a second try always gets much easier. If you have introduced yourself to a stranger, you’ve already overcome the most difficult step. Just by saying “Hi” to a person you don’t know, you’ve given yourself permission to do so again. This is the perfect moment to turn acquaintances into allies.

• Just had a talk with a new person? Think about dropping them a message like, "Thanks for the interesting talk. I appreciate that both of us are ___. Looking forward to our next encounter and, maybe, our next project together.”
• See them in the hallway again? A quick "Hi again!" and a smile are followed by a follow-up question, such as "How was the party?" or "How is your report doing?"
• You’re together on a group call or meeting? Approach them with “Nice to see you again” or send them a private message of support, if they stumble over their words.
• Came across some info that may be useful to them? Drop a message like "I just came across this and it reminded me of our chat about _______," forward the website, email, podcast, video, article, or white paper.
• Came across an opportunity that might be interesting to them? A message like “I saw this event in the city this weekend and thought of you. Check it out if it’s interesting to you.” would do its trick.
• Know two people who could help each other? Introduction them by saying, “Have you met _______? She’s also _______. Let me know if you want to chat with her and I can ask if she is interested.”

Little things - matter. A smile, a short message, or just a few words of support might open new horizons as well as help you build work relationships fast and easy.
