How to Build Real Connections on LinkedIn (From a Budding Entrepreneur Who’s Learning and Thriving)

As a passionate designer and a curious entrepreneur exploring new opportunities for growth and visibility, LinkedIn has become more than just a platform for me—it’s my gateway to learning from industry experts and connecting with like-minded professionals. Here’s what I’ve learnt (and am still learning!) about engaging effectively:

1. Your Profile = Your First Impression

Think of your profile as your personal design project—it should tell your story beautifully. Highlight your skills, showcase your achievements, and let your personality shine. A polished profile sets the tone for the connections you want to build.

2. Post with Purpose

I’ve found that sharing insights, lessons learnt, and even creative experiments resonates deeply. Whether it’s design tips, entrepreneurial musings, or takeaways from an inspiring mentor, your content should add value, spark curiosity, or start a conversation.

3. Engage Like You Mean It

Authentic engagement is a game-changer. Instead of scrolling mindlessly, I comment thoughtfully, ask questions, and genuinely engage with posts that catch my attention. Every interaction is an opportunity to connect and learn.

4. Find Your Tribe

Joining relevant LinkedIn groups has been eye-opening for me. Whether it’s a group for designers, entrepreneurs, or innovators, these spaces are goldmines for inspiration and networking.

5. Thoughtful Comments > Generic Reactions

Comments are where real conversations start. I’ve made it a habit to go beyond “Great post!” and share my takeaways or ask questions that keep the discussion going.

6. Intentional Connections Matter

When sending connection requests, I personalise them with a note about why I admire their work or how we could collaborate. It’s a small step that leads to meaningful relationships.

7. Stay in Touch

A connection isn’t just a number. I follow up with new contacts, share resources, or simply say hi—it’s all about nurturing relationships over time.

8. Celebrate Your Wins (and Others’ Too)

Sharing milestones, projects, or lessons learnt isn’t just about visibility—it’s about inviting others into your journey. I’ve realised that celebrating others’ achievements is just as important—it strengthens bonds and builds goodwill.

Here are some questions I always keep in mind when engaging:

  • What are your goals, and how can I help you reach them?
  • What challenges are you facing in your journey?
  • Who or what could support you?
  • When can we discuss ideas or collaborate?

9. Be Generous with Knowledge

I love sharing tips, tools, and resources that have helped me in my journey. Giving back creates trust and adds value to your network.

10. Stay Curious and Informed

Keeping up with industry trends has helped me position myself as someone eager to learn and grow. Sharing insights also shows that you’re invested in your field.

11. Showcase Your Expertise

Whether it’s a design project, an entrepreneurial milestone, or a simple success story, I use LinkedIn to let people see what I bring to the table. It’s not bragging—it’s sharing your hard work with pride.

12. Consistency is Key

Whether it’s posting, commenting, or connecting, showing up regularly is non-negotiable. Over time, this consistency has built trust and credibility within my network.

13. Gratitude is Powerful

A simple “thank you” to someone who engaged with your post or supported your journey can leave a lasting impression. Gratitude nurtures relationships.

14. Relationships Take Time

Building a network is like growing a garden—it requires patience, care, and consistent effort. Celebrate your connections, cheer them on, and be genuinely invested in their success.

15. Learn, Test, Improve

I’m constantly experimenting with what works on LinkedIn. Using analytics has helped me understand what resonates with my audience and refine my approach.

These are lessons I’m applying every day as I grow in my journey as a designer and entrepreneur. LinkedIn isn’t just a platform; it’s a place to collaborate, learn, and share. If you’re on a similar path, I’d love to connect and learn from you too! Let’s grow together. ??
