How to Build a Productive Audience on LinkedIn: DIY Edition

Starting out on LinkedIn with 3200 connections, I wanted to lift the veil of mystery both over myself and the world of LinkedIn. I'd heard so much about it becoming a true tool for professionals and I was curious enough to dive right in.

After dealing with a few contractors that over-promised and under performed, disappointment wasn't what I was looking for. So I spent nearly 2 hours a day (most times more) for 6 weeks carefully choosing each individual I sent out a connection request to. It became a game that had me winning every time a new connection joined me.

I wanted a viable, pertinent and skilled network that I could contribute to, grow from and do business with. The DIY approach helped me grow to now 10,000 high quality connections.

The key here is to build a true audience that wants to hear your message. That cares about what you talk about and where you are going. Not only a support system but an audience, a focus group and celebratory partners.

The only way to do this is "The Grind" . Choose your connections, reach out to them right away and keep up with congratulations, happy birthdays and likes/comments.
