How to Build a Newsletter Business and Turn It Into Revenue: Lessons from Sahil Bloom

How to Build a Newsletter Business and Turn It Into Revenue: Lessons from Sahil Bloom

  • Hey readers, we're changing up the format of Entrepreneur at Work this week. Love it? Hate it? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Sahil Bloom had no experience as a writer, but that didn't stop him from building a newsletter . And it's a good thing he did, too — that newsletter now drives upwards of $70,000 in revenue per month, and it helped him scale his business, which brought in $10 million in revenue in 2023.

Bloom talked to us about what made him take that leap in the first place, and how others like him can tap into the lucrative creator space without going too deep.

Here are his three main lessons:

  1. You don't need to dive into being a creator full time. Most creators make money by selling ads, courses or other products. But that's all a lot of work, and not very scalable. Bloom thinks there's a more stable way, which brings us to #2...
  2. Your needs are other people's needs. Bloom looked at what he was spending the most money on (say, a video editing service) and thought: How can I make a profit from this? Now he helps launch companies that offer the same services he, as a creator, needed. (Say, video editing services.)
  3. You grow more when you sell less. Bloom doesn't have to constantly try to upsell his audience because his newsletter and social channels aren't his main revenue driver. Instead of treating your work as the product, treat it like a laboratory. Examine your pain points, and consider how you could solve them — not just for yourself, but for others.

Want to learn more about how Bloom got his business off the ground, and continues to grow it? Entrepreneur's Jason Fiefer has the interview here.
