How to build links and establish visibility if you're a small business?

Think about SEO the same way you’re thinking about building relationships in your real life. You want to connect with people you trust, value, people which are generally good for you. You don’t want to connect with people who are untrusty and tricky. Right?

It’s the same with links.

When you apply these criteria, it’s easy to see in which direction you need to go.

Let's assume you added your company to all local directories and citations available. Now, let's get into details.

I'll use small business as an example.

What are the things you need to do?

  1. Connect with relevant sources (portals, newspapers, relevant blogs). If it's a small town and there isn't any, become the media for that place.

Example - you are an auto repair shop and you have a plumber who's known for good work and has a good website. You want to have a link on his website to your website.

2. You are a part of the local business network - have a link on their website.

3. You're doing something for the community (helping sports clubs and doing humanitarian work) - have you link on their website, too.

4. Upload and share your products on other relevant platforms (example - AutoTrader for cars).

5. Look at the queries in Google Search Console, and, if you have a blog, find blog posts that rank higher than you for the relevant queries and ask them to put a link to your blog post in their article (you can also that on your blog for someone relevant, too).

6. Writing a guest article for someone's blog (and vice versa).

7. If you can speak, try to speak whenever you have a chance - conferences, podcasts, it will all link back to you.

8. Answer questions on Quora with a link to your website share those answers targeting audience you want to read those answers. I'm doing that each day. Find my profile HERE.

9. Repost blog posts on LinkedIn and Medium.

If you need answers about the specific niche, or you actually need someone to help you build your presence, feel free to send me a message.

Hi Nemanja, great article, I loved the fact it's geared towards small businesses. I'm curious about #5 though; if we're trying to rank for the same KWs, then we're probably in the same niche. What motivation would someone ranking higher than me have to link back to my blog? Could you give me an example of the value a "smaller" blog could provide to better-ranking ones so they would give them a backlink? I could only think of the scenario where the better-ranking one is in a shoulder niche and the lower-ranking is in a narrower niche, so they could both benefit, but not if they are in the same niche. Thanks!
