How to Build a Company Culture Centered on Well-Being
“We need to teach people that it’s ok to show care for one another at work.” Having a strong sense of empathy helps team members effectively help customers, and also creates a positive work environment.
The concept of corporate well-being has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. It went from focusing on health and fitness to a multi-faceted holistic approach. In more recent years, many brands have advocated for employee and organizational well-being. Being a true advocate means taking actionable steps to support it.?
How can high-growth companies integrate this value into their company culture successfully??
Our SVP of Well-Being and Resilience, Chris Harrison, Ph.D., shares his perspective on how companies can foster a culture of well-being while maintaining growth.?
Encourage Collaboration and Cooperation
Companies should help employees develop their emotional intelligence (EQ). As Chris states, “We need to teach people that it’s ok to show care for one another at work.” Having a strong sense of empathy helps team members effectively help customers, and also creates a positive work environment.?
Treating each other with respect, kindness, and compassion in the workplace leads to better performance and longer tenure. When these factors are at play, companies can experience supercharged growth and higher levels of satisfaction among employees and customers.
Be Flexible?
If there’s one thing remote working has shown us, it’s that companies need to be flexible to truly foster well-being. The approach companies use to create a sense of well-being in person isn’t necessarily the same for at-home or hybrid employees. According to Chris, “The first step in determining how to better support people is to truly understand how they are doing.”?

Brands also have to continuously develop ideas for building an effective remote community. That’s why companies should remain flexible and open when it comes to employee well-being. Technology can help achieve this by allowing leaders to better understand and adapt as their team evolves.?
Start With Recruiting
One of the best ways to maintain the well-being of your team is to make it a part of your recruiting process. Evaluating the technical skills of potential employees is a key component of talent acquisition, but what about soft skills? Chris says, “We can restructure success profiles to include the most important EQ competencies needed for particular roles.”?
The right candidate will have the technical skills to perform their job and the soft skills to be an open and caring team member. Hiring talent with a high EQ makes it easier to build an internal culture that values diversity, inclusivity, and well-being.
Leverage Technology?
When it comes to employee well-being, technology is your friend. More specifically, advancements in neuroscience and cognitive psychology technology play a large role in this. Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) can help provide immersive experiences for remote workers to create a stronger sense of community that’s independent of location.?
Artificial intelligence (AI), ethical data collection, and?neuro-insight innovations ?also play a part in understanding your team’s well-being. Through these methods, you can identify stressors and develop solutions that make your team feel supported and balanced.?
Final Thoughts
Chris believes well-being isn’t something that can only be experienced or practiced outside of the workplace. He says, “Ultimately, I believe that work can be a place where people are supported in optimizing their well-being and achieving self-actualization.”?
When we all work together to understand and support each other, we can find fulfillment on and off the job, helping individuals and organizations realize their full potential.
