How to Bring Your Team Together in a Deeper Way

How to Bring Your Team Together in a Deeper Way

There’s something beautiful that happens when people come together and feel a shared energy—a kind of spark that lights up the room and connects everyone. This is called Collective Effervescence, a term first coined by the sociologist émile Durkheim over a hundred years ago. He noticed that when people gather for a common purpose, they experience a heightened sense of belonging, enthusiasm, and even joy. Collective Effervescence still rings true today, especially within our businesses.

The very fact that we gather together awakens a shared consciousness that is more powerful than any individual will.— émile Durkheim

Now more than ever, as entrepreneurs, we need to create that same feeling within our teams. We live in a world that can often feel isolating, and yet the simple act of gathering and working toward a shared goal can help restore connection and meaning. When you nurture this feeling, you build a company that thrives not just because of individual accomplishments but because of a collective spirit.

The very act of joining together creates something new, something greater than the sum of its parts.— émile Durkheim

Here are a few simple ways you can bring this to life in your own company:

Daily Huddle: A Moment to Connect

One of the easiest ways to begin fostering that sense of shared purpose is through a daily huddle. It doesn’t have to be long—just 10-15 minutes at the start of the day where the team can touch base. Use this time to celebrate wins, talk about challenges, or simply share how everyone’s feeling. These small but consistent moments build a rhythm that keeps everyone aligned and feeling part of something bigger.

Celebrate Wins: The Big and the Small

We often think of celebrations for the big milestones—closing a major deal, launching a product—but what if we celebrated the small steps along the way, too? A quick acknowledgment of a team member’s effort, or a shared “win of the week” at your Friday meeting, can go a long way in showing that every contribution matters. It’s a way to say, “I see you,” and that’s what helps bind a team together.

Create Meaningful Rituals

Rituals help us make sense of our work and our place within it. They don’t have to be complicated—something as simple as starting each week with a moment of gratitude or sharing lessons learned at the end of each month can create a sense of shared experience. These consistent, intentional practices remind everyone that they are part of a community with a common heartbeat.

Host Gatherings That Matter

Beyond work, find time to gather as people, not just employees. Whether it’s a virtual coffee chat, a team lunch, or an afternoon of brainstorming, these events allow relationships to grow in a more personal way. It’s in these moments of connection that people feel supported, seen, and valued, and that energy will spill into the work you do together.

Encourage Learning Together

When we learn together, we grow together. Consider starting a book club, attending workshops as a team, or inviting speakers to share their wisdom. Shared learning fosters curiosity and bonds the group through discovery. It creates an environment where everyone feels they’re evolving not just professionally but personally too.

Live Your Core Values Every Day

Finally, ground everything you do in your company’s core values. These should be more than just words—they should shape decisions and actions daily. When people feel aligned with those values, they experience a deeper connection to the work they’re doing and the people they’re doing it with.

Building Collective Effervescence: A Simple Guide for Your Company

  1. Start Your Day Together: Set a daily time to connect, whether it’s to share wins, challenges, or just a quick “hello.”
  2. Celebrate the Journey: Make it a habit to celebrate progress, no matter how small, to show everyone their efforts are appreciated.
  3. Establish Rituals: Create small, meaningful practices that happen regularly, reminding everyone they’re part of something bigger.
  4. Make Time for Fun: Plan gatherings where people can connect beyond work. These moments strengthen bonds in a way that formal meetings can’t.
  5. Learn and Grow Together: Encourage shared learning through books, courses, or guest speakers. It brings fresh energy to the team.
  6. Revisit Your Core Values: Check in with your team to ensure your values are being lived out in the company’s actions and decisions.
