Happy Deepavali to all of you and your family. Deepavali is all about happiness, inner light, and togetherness. For me this year this is about meeting old friends ending next week with a wedding. Excited about these get-togethers and traveling too. Will be erratic with my posts and will not be uploading podcasts, this week and the next. Happiness is all about smiles, joy, and the ability to accept yourself as you are. This is where a sense of humor is very important in all that you do. Humor is a choice as much as it is a skill. All it needs is working on. It is how we place our points of view that can be the reason for the smiles. Anything delivered with humor is remembered for long.
There are many reasons why humor is important. Some of the most popular ones are: It gets people to listen attentively and remember for a long time. It improves group cohesiveness, builds trust, and helps diffuse conflict. It is a choice we have and it is wiser to use humor when you want the conversation to take place in a friendly cool manner. Some jokes are how you tell them that makes a big difference. Tina Fey takes the cake with this George Clooney one!
Here are some ways of incorporating humor into the presentation:
Start off with a smile: Make yourself audience-friendly. If your profile has been read, and people are waiting for you to say something. Say something to break the ice. Start with a good quote or an anecdote or share a fun fact about you that makes you relatable not a super duper achiever.
Prepare, Practice, Pause: While writing out the script, try funny lines as many times as possible. Nothing can replace repetition. Practice it so much that it seems a natural part of you. Own it. After you say the punch line... PAUSE! If you have to explain after a joke, it is not worth it!
Use Trending Memes Memes are the best way to bring smiles if you are not too good at jokes! They definitely are a great way to break the monotony of the talk or presentation.
Make fun of yourself: It always works. A person who is self-assured only can do that. It takes a lot of courage. When you make fun of yourself, no one else can. It is a beautiful empowered space.
Wait for moments where you can see the audience surprised: Tell them this is exactly how I reacted too. Since you are telling the story create drama before that surprise moment. Get to the moment when your audience least expects it and then share the joke or the surprise element. It is very impactful.
Would love to know what more you add to add humor to your talk or presentation.
