How to Bring Light to Your Community

Do you have your "group" at work? People you go to when you need a lunch buddy, or an ear to just talk about something other than that latest project? If you're lucky, your work buddies are also your "regular" buddies outside of the office, too.
This community is something that everyone wants and ultimately thrives with once they have it. Once you're part of a community, you have a responsibility to be a positive and active member of that community. On the 4word blog this month, we've talked about how to be an influence on your community and how to bring light to the lives of those around you. We recently shared some ideas for bringing some joy or light to the lives of those in your various communities. Do you have one you would add to the lists below? Leave a comment with what you would do!
Influencing at work
- Bring your officemate a surprise cup of coffee or their favorite breakfast treat with an encouraging note.
- Offer to take the new hire under your wing and mentor them on their new career with the company.
- Exercise respectful treatment of everyone around you, whether they are someone you're managing or the CEO.
- Listen more than you talk. Ask questions and really get to know your colleagues.
- Pray for your co-workers, even if they never know you are.
Influencing at home
- Have a no-screen dinner with your loved ones, ensuring that everyone is seen and heard.
- Keep a gratitude journal and make it a point at the end of each day to add to it — a grateful heart will find it harder to be a negative heart. Share your entries with your family members.
- If you have children, make it a habit to have a one-on-one day with each of them every month, and make it a “no phone interruptions” day.
