This Week's Question is from Jolene Knorr in San José, Costa Rica:
“Are remote jobs for Spanish speakers increasing? Or the only way to find a good remote job is speaking advanced English?”
"Hola Jolene,
Your question is well-timed given the recent release of GPT-4o which drastically improves the speed and accuracy of real-time translation.
It's hard to think of a group that will benefit more from this progress than skilled workers in non-English speaking countries.
The level of English required to work for an overseas company is already decreasing, and will soon be entirely irrelevant.
I cover this in more detail in the latest episode of Out of Office, which is linked above.
Buena suerte!"

4 个月I think https://conveer.app would be a great addition to the Tools section in a future issue. It’s a team building Slack integration for remote and hybrid teams. The thing I’ve noticed while working on remote teams is the burnout of video calls to get to know teammates. When someone is onboarding, there’s always this pressure to get to know so many people as quickly as possible, and those coffee chats add up. On the flip side, remote work is more impactful when teams can have those little eureka moments that are helped when a team really knows one another and feels comfortable together. I made a Slack workflow at the start of the pandemic that let colleagues in a channel add questions to a queue, and once a day it would pull a question. Everybody had fun with it, but the thing that stuck with me is how easy it became to actually get to know people, on my own time, without the effort of video calls. People felt more free, and you could get better get to know people’s communication styles and work personalities. After re-making that workflow at multiple organizations, I finally turned it into an integration. Would love for you to check it out and I’d be happy to write more thoughts about remote team bonding if you’re interested!
