How Bokashi composting transforms organic waste into high-quality fertilizer

As food prices rise and self-sufficiency becomes an increasingly important part of our daily lives, growing even a small amount of vegetables or herbs on a balcony or in a raised bed is becoming more feasible. What seemed unimaginable a decade ago is now a reality: with the addition of a microbial inoculant, organic waste can turn into valuable "black gold" for the soil. This modern approach allows us to close the food production loop by returning to the soil what it provides us. Besides benefiting ourselves, we also reduce pollution and our household carbon footprint.

Effective management of organic waste is facilitated by excellent composters designed to fit any kitchen countertop or chosen space. If made from post-consumer recycled plastic, you also contribute to the reuse of plastic that would otherwise end up in yellow bins. Composters provide an easy, practical, and efficient way to recycle organic waste. Every day, you can dispose of various types of organic waste, such as fruit, vegetables, coffee grounds, egg shells, meat, and bones.

How to Use the Bokashi Organko Composter:

  • Before closing the lid, press the waste down well to expel air from the container.
  • Each time you add new organic waste, sprinkle it with 20 ml of Bokashi inoculant to ensure quick and effective fermentation.
  • If the composter is too dry, add a little water; if it is too wet, add Bokashi inoculant.
  • Regularly remove the fermentation liquid to prevent excess moisture and unpleasant odors in the composter.
  • When the composter is full, leave it closed for two weeks to allow the organic waste to ferment and turn into high-quality fermented mass.

After fourteen days, you will obtain two by-products. The first is a liquid that can be used to water indoor or balcony plants and to clean drains and septic tanks. The second product is the fermented mass, which serves as a base for compost. Bury this mass in the soil and wait for it to decompose. This process is three times faster than traditional composting.

Benefits of Bokashi Composting:

  • Improves soil structure with natural nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
  • Enhances plant growth and prevents diseases, as the compost is rich in microorganisms that promote soil biodiversity and increase plant resistance.
  • Improves the quality of harvested food, as Bokashi fermentation allows for more effective nutrient acquisition.
  • Prevents plant diseases and pests, as Bokashi compost can be used as a natural means of control.
  • Reduces watering needs since Bokashi compost retains moisture in the soil.
  • Saves on organic waste disposal costs.

Organic waste that is not properly composted can release greenhouse gases that are up to 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide, while commercial fertilizers harm groundwater. Bokashi composting offers a simple and effective solution to these problems. Although the method is still gaining popularity, it will soon become a routine practice embraced by future generations. Adopting Bokashi composting into our lives does not require special knowledge, only the decision to change habits. Let composting become part of our daily routine, as small changes can yield significant results and contribute to a sustainable future for our planet today.
