How to blog consistently for life...

How to blog consistently for life...

(or until you retire to a tropical island :) ...works also for podcasts, webinars, Facebook lives or anything you need to create on a regular basis.

Human beings are not built for consistency.

We're not wired to do the same thing over and over again unless it provides short-term gratification.

We need to hack our own brains and trick ourselves into doing something consistently in the long-term.

It's always been hard for me, I have the attention span of the proverbial goldfish (ok it's not a proverb but hey it sounds good) I like to change for the sake of change, my brain can't stop dishing out new ideas, its a strangely healthy mix of dyslexia and #fomo aka entrepreneur-brain.

It took me years working in our agency, trying to bring the team to a point where we would never miss a blog deadline. Piece by piece I created a system that is totally foolproof - that works for any personality type! Guaranteed!

Here's what you need to do in 3 simple steps:

#1 CHOOSE THE RIGHT ICA

Never heard about ICA's - it just means your Ideal Client Avatar (aka Client Persona) The problem is that we all have more than one and we don't really want to choose one over the other. Here's the good news - you can have a fantastic well-ranking blog targeting more than one ... But you can only write (and plan) for one ICA at a time. So decide which one you will begin with and get cracking.

Undecided?

Go with the one that excites you the most.

The one you can write about effortlessly. The one you chew your girlfriend's ear about when you go for coffee.

KNOW YOUR KEYWORDS AND WEAVE THEM INTO YOUR COPY

Would you ever stop blogging if your blog posts ranked on the first page of Google within weeks?

Of course NOT!

Imagine if they actually ranked for the RIGHT keywords and brought in your ideal clients to your website, in droves.

Isn't that worth working for?

Then quit making excuses and research your keywords.

I know what you're thinking...

"hey that's too technical for me"

"I've tried it but it was overwhelming..."

Now go back and try again. It's likely a mindset problem - a technology block not a keyword problem.

You can find your own keywords even if you're totally low tech. I promise. I see this all the time.

Anyone can do it.

Ok - If you can't figure it out alone get help - outsourcing your keyword research is not pricey and you'll probably only need to do it once a year if you create a yearly plan.

DITCH THAT BLOGGING CALENDAR FOR ASSURED SUCCESS

Yes, I'm sorry to break it to you. You've probably downloaded a dozen content calendars from those self-proclaimed blogging gurus. That's one of the reasons you stopped blogging or can't seem to do it regularly.

Find the folder and delete them.

Right now.

Yes really.

DO NOT PUT A POSTING DATE ON YOUR TITLES

Allow yourself to choose the post title that inspires you the most when you sit down to write. Your inspiration is not likely to flow if you've cornered yourself by pre-selecting this week's title. Writing will feel like hard work.

Say goodbye to writers' block for good.

Let your creative juices choose in which direction to flow.

PLAN YOUR TIME NOT THE NUMBER OF BLOG POSTS

Plan writing time, not quantity. Plan to write for 2 hours per week if that's the amount of time you can afford to throw at it.

Over time you will produce more within the same time block. If you try to produce 2 articles a week from day 1 and need to write for 4 hours you will stop before the 2-month mark.

Just block the time you can afford every week and focus on getting faster and better within the time you have.

In a few weeks, you will see your posts ranking and your list will start growing, you will be hooked.

PS. Still thinking it sounds hard. If it weren't a little hard everyone would be doing it. This is exactly why it's a fantastic opportunity that still gives a great return!

Some great tips there Stephanie Fiteni; I'm quite a fan of the planning for time not the blogs tip. Like the chatty writing style too. Great stuff.
