How the Big Fish Makes Waves

How the Big Fish Makes Waves

The Chinese sturgeon (fun fact) migrates downriver in a gradually transforming manner from passive drift to active swimming. This fish has a fascinating adaptation that can teach us a valuable lesson. Just like passive drift in life, it could be beneficial if it takes you to your destination. But if not, you'll find yourself going through the motions without any real direction or purpose.

If you've achieved success in certain areas but still feel unfulfilled, it's time to set personal goals based on your core values. Here's how to get started:

  1. Identify your personal values. These are the things that are most important to you in life. Your values might include things like family, education, creativity, or adventure. Make a list of your top values and prioritize them in order of importance. If you need more guidance, visit my previous article on values.
  2. Brainstorm goals based on your values. For example, if one of your values is creativity, your goal might be to start a new artistic project. If your value is family, your goal might be to spend more quality time with your loved ones.
  3. Use the SMART framework to make your goals more achievable. This stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, instead of setting a vague goal like "be more creative," set a specific goal like "complete a new painting within the next 3 months."
  4. Prioritize your goals based on their importance and the amount of time and effort they will require. Consider breaking larger goals into smaller, more manageable steps.
  5. Review and adjust your goals regularly to track your progress and adjust them if necessary. Life circumstances and priorities can change, so be flexible and willing to make adjustments as needed.

If you've read my previous article, you'll remember that two of my personal values are Curiosity and Exploration. Here's an example of my thought process pertaining to my own goals for these specific values:

My personal SMART goal to fulfill my Curiosity:

Complete a college-level Spanish language course within one year from today.

The breakdown: This goal is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound, which are the key characteristics of a SMART goal. Learning a new language will satisfy my curiosity about other cultures and provide me with new perspectives. A college-level course covers the basics of the language and is suitable for beginners like me, providing syllabus as a clear measuring stick for my progress. The goal is specific and time-bound, giving me a deadline for this deliverable.

My personal SMART goal to fulfill my need for Exploration:

Explore at least one artistic venue of Mexican heritage every quarter, leveraging my basic understanding of Spanish.

The breakdown: By exploring at least one artistic venue of Mexican heritage every quarter (be it visual art, music, or cultural celebration), I will actively engage with Mexican culture and broaden my horizons. Leveraging my basic understanding of Spanish, I will communicate and connect with local artists and individuals, enhancing my overall experience. The timeframe of one quarter provides a clear deadline to ensure continuous progress towards my goal.

By building personal goals based on your personal values, you can create a sense of purpose and direction in your life. Use the SMART framework and regularly review and adjust your goals to keep yourself on track.

What goal will you select for yourself next?
