How The Best Educational Centres Support Their Learners And Create Success

Not all educational establishments are created equal. The good ones are more than just the sum of their examination results. Overall learner performance can depend on many socio-economic factors. However, a good educational centre will have structures and practices in place that will help all learners work to their strengths and become successful.

An environment that allows learners and the organisation to flourish can be fostered by taking into account several important factors.

A supportive environment where all stakeholders feel invested

It’s important that an educational centre develops strong relationships both within and between each section of their community. So, teachers, learners and their families should all feel comfortable within their own roles and also when interacting with other parts of the educational community.

Strong leadership and vision are key to creating the respect and understanding necessary to maintain strong relationships among and between staff, students, and families.

The importance of teaching learners how to learn

The days of memorising information to regurgitate it for exams are gone. While learning by rote has its place, active learning is the way forward. Learners don’t just need to be provided with information. They need to be taught how to learn. This is an important life skill and different learners learn in different ways.

Creating and implementing engaging methods that help learners understand how to better manage their own learning will empower them. It will set them up to achieve and be successful when they go on into the world of work.

Not just teaching for exam success

Academic success is important, but it is not the only thing that successful educational centres are looking to develop in their learners. Learners should also be taught skills, habits, and mindsets that will help their social and emotional development. Positive attitudes to learning are vital.

Behaviours and values can be positively shaped by the educational experience a learner receives. Many employers are currently finding that learners are not equipped with the soft skills they need for jobs in an increasingly automated world. Soft skills can be learnt and developed. They should be given the time and weight they deserve, and the results will speak for themselves.

Diversity, inclusivity, and community

No two people are alike. Individuality should be respected and encouraged. Success comes in many guises.

Those with learning disabilities should be offered support and equal opportunities to learn. Extended learning programmes can be offered to the most academically able. All learners should be given the opportunity to achieve to the best of their abilities, regardless of their background or ability.

Interactive teaching methods and techniques support the different ways in which people learn. Some may need visual cues, or hands-on experience to understand and retain information. Innovation and creativity should be encouraged.

Community partnerships and the importance of citizenship will benefit both the educational centre and the learners. Centres that are involved and invested in the community will feel the benefit. And learners that are encouraged to spend time with those who are either more or less privileged than they are, will see the world differently. They will be more likely to want to make a difference, both to their own and others’ lives.
