How to benefit from career coaching

Did you ever get a question from your manager about where you would like to see yourself one year from now?

If so, your mind likely jumped into what you could do as a next role in corporate, what roles there are, and which one could be a good fit.

Next, you were probably wondering whether you should show ambition by stating that you would see yourself in an executive role by that time.

Or be more conservative and discuss how you will close the gap between your current expertise and the required competencies for a promotion or a horizontal step.

Chances are it also crossed your mind to answer the question by saying:

“You know what, I would like to be on a beautiful beach, enjoying the sun while sipping a cocktail and spending time with my loved ones.”

At least, it came to my mind occasionally when I was still working in corporate.

Without joking, there are so many options to explore during your career that it can be daunting.

You can climb the career leader, but being focused only on making a promotion, might result in missing out on other opportunities in a different field.

The voice in your head keeps whispering that there might be something else out there worth exploring.

However, you are so busy in your leadership role that no mind space is available to think it through.

And without any clarity on where you would like to be going, it is hard to define your career path.

So, this question about where you would like to see yourself one year from now might get you even more confused.

Going confidently in the direction of your dreams requires knowing where you are going.

How can you know your career path and develop your career?

Career development can mean getting more confident in your current role, striving for a promotion, or making a step horizontally in corporate.

It can also be transitioning into something new. Think of a different type of company, a career change, or starting an entrepreneurial journey.?

Exploring all these options and getting clarity is crucial to transition to your dream career.?

A career coach can empower you on this journey, but there is more to it!?

How can you benefit from career coaching?

First, let’s investigate what career coaching is.

Career coaching is when a coach partners with an employee to help reach career goals and full potential.

Career coaches can support you with your career planning, career development, career decisions, and career changes.?

Within the career coaching space, there are many specific topics that a career coach can help you with.

Here are some examples:?

  • Navigating career changes and career transitions.?
  • Examining career assessment results and providing guidance.?
  • Assisting with career planning?and career growth.
  • Helping to set career goals and long-term professional goals.
  • Exploring new career options and opportunities.
  • Regaining work-life balance by?setting boundaries and examining priorities.
  • Finding footing in a new leadership role and overcoming imposter syndrome.
  • Identifying new strategies to enhance career development.
  • Improving skills: communication, presentation, leading teams, delegating, networking, stakeholder management, and providing feedback.
  • Prioritizing your mental health and doing your inner work by exploring your blind spots and limiting beliefs.

Why does coaching work?

The Institute of Coaching reports that the personal benefits of coaching are as wide-ranging as the individuals involved.

Numerous clients report that coaching positively impacted their careers as well as their lives by helping them to:

  • Establish and take action toward achieving goals
  • Become more self-reliant
  • Gain more job and life satisfaction
  • Contribute more effectively to the team and the organization
  • Take greater responsibility and accountability for actions and commitments
  • Work more easily and productively with others (boss, direct reports, peers)
  • Communicate more effectively

Coaching works better than training alone for the following reasons:

  • Accountability. You will get more down when having regularly scheduled sessions versus doing it by yourself. You will take more effective actions, set higher goals, and think bigger when you work with a professional coach.
  • Expertise. A certified professional coach is trained to help you discover the right goals for you and structure your personal and professional life to achieve greater productivity with less effort. You will achieve more in less time with the input of a coach on your side.
  • Delivery. A certified professional coach knows how to use the right questions so that you are internally motivated. Coaching typically works best with a biweekly call so you have time to integrate new ways of thinking and take action toward your goals. The work usually happens between the sessions.
  • Speed. Most people find that things happen very quickly after hiring a coach. The experience can be challenging and is almost always uplifting.

It’s critical that you can step out of your own “bubble”. Partnering with an objective professional coach holds a mirror up to you.?

A coach's ONLY agenda is to help you achieve YOUR goals.

How can you tell if you are ready for career coaching?

Pop quiz!

Here are some questions I explore when interviewing prospective clients who want to work with me.

Score yourself:

  1. Do you want results faster and more effective than you will achieve by yourself?
  2. Are you open to new ideas and willing to explore other perspectives?
  3. Are you comfortable being challenged to step out of your comfort zone?
  4. Are you seeking clarity on what your dream career could be?
  5. On a scale of 1-10, with “1” being?not at all motivated to “10” being?completely motivated are you at an?“8” or higher?in terms of how motivated you are to identify and transition to your dream career?
  6. Do you need help overcoming fears and limiting beliefs about achieving your dream career?
  7. Do you keep repeating the same mistakes - taking a job because it sounds good but ending up feeling unfulfilled?

If you answered "YES" to over half of these questions you may be ready to work with a career coach.
