How to behave like a gentleman when in Travel
Air travel is no easy business. You encounter all kinds of people. Some people are quite easy to interact with and you even end up making new friends, while others are not that likeable. Don’t you just hate it when a person tries cutting the line at the airport? When someone eats like a maniac next to you? When a fellow passenger is too loud? A man dressed inappropriate clothing, constantly staring at you to the point of discomfort? We all tend to have at least one annoying habit. It is human nature to overlook one’s own flaws. What if we too as a traveler sometimes become a nuisance for others? Embarrassing to even think of it I am sure. Here are some great tips to follow to ensure that you be a gentleman while abroad, specifically during air travel.
Dress Appropriately
Always respect other cultures and religious beliefs. Make sure you dress according the acceptable norms of the country you are visiting. There is no point standing out and offending the locals with something that you wear. Do your research well. For example, in Muslim countries you are expected to dress modestly. Even during air travel, dress like a gentleman would do. Shorts and sweat shirts are a big no.
Follow the alcohol laws
This is especially important for vacationers heading to Middle East or a Muslim country. For Muslims, alcohol is prohibited and it would be highly offensive if you start consuming liquor in a public place. Offending the locals with your attitude is the last thing you want to do.
Socially acceptable behavior
For each country there are different definitions of socially acceptable behavior. Now who would have thought a simple thumbs up or tipping money would be offensive to some? Yes, you read it right. In countries like Turkey and Iran, a thumbs up is considered very rude. Avoid unnecessary Hi-fives too. Make sure you do your homework on the country before a visit.
Avoid Public display of Affection
Now you may be in love but please tone down the affection a bit. Holding hands may be fine but kissing in public is frowned upon in many countries.
Don’t forget your manners
During the flight, please make sure you care for the comfort of others as well as your own. Loud talking, laughing and chewing is not a very gentleman thing to do. Also, please know that not everyone wants to chat during the flight. Some actually want to catch up on sleep. Don’t get on anyone’s nerves. Please be nice and courteous to the flight attendants too. They deserve respect no matter how cranky or tired you are.
Good Luggage
Don’t just pack your stuff in the first worn out or de-shaped suitcase you see in the storage area. A classy traveler travels in style with a classy suitcase in hand. So yes, it would be worth investing in a good quality, nice luggage bag.
