How to Become a True Disciple of Christ

“Then said Jesus unto His disciples, if any will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.?For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it”. Matt 16:24-25 KJV

Question - Are you really a true disciple of Christ or are you just a believer?

The question is can you be a believer and not a disciple??Jesus said you must be “Born Again” to become a believer.?Roman 10:9-10 tells us that, “if we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, and shalt believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.?For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation”.?So, when we confess with our mouth who Jesus is and believe in our heart we are born again.?We become a child of God.?But do we make Him Lord of our lives??The truth is that sometimes for years or maybe even a lifetime we do not.?We live as though we have never been saved.?Not necessarily as a bad person but just not submitted to God.?Don’t feel bad. There is no condemnation here. Just encouragement to go deeper. Find someone to study with who can help you. Some of us have never been taught. Some of us have never been discipled.

But know that, Jesus' desire is for us to become His disciples.?He challenges us here when he says, “if any will (desires to) come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me”.?Do you desire to come after Jesus??Are you willing to take up your cross and follow him??Paul said it this way, I am crucified with Christ:?nevertheless, I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me:?and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me (Gal 2:20).?

Are you ready to decrease and allow Christ to live in you??Are you ready in your flesh to live by the faith of the Son of God that the life of Jesus might be made manifest in your mortal flesh (II Cor 4:11b)??Are you ready to go deeper??Well, Jesus took it deeper when He said “to those Jews which believed on him, if ye continue in my word, then you are my disciples indeed; Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32) NIV. Jesus said, it was not enough to only believe on Him, but we must live out (continue in/abide in) His teachings to be His disciples indeed. If you don’t know His word, how can you continue in it. That is why it was important in the Great Commission where Jesus commissioned His disciples to “make disciples” He instructs them to “teach them to obey everything that I have commanded you” (Matt 28:19-20). Humble yourself. Position yourself to be taught – to be discipled - so that you can continue in His word and be His disciple indeed.
