How to Become a Subject Matter Expert

Let me start by stating that I AM NOT a subject matter expert. However, I am working on it. Being part of the Orbitform team means that I am constantly learning what Orbitform can provide and general manufacturing.

Here are three activities that our team takes to become subject matter experts.

1. Shadow in the Solutions Lab?– New employees spend time with our experienced Solutions Lab technicians. They are learning firsthand the basics of each process and why one method might be preferred over another.
2. Get Out on the Shop Floor?– Our VP gives a tour of the machines in progress once a month. He goes over each machine's essential functions and any upgrades and why those are recommended. We are encouraged to ask questions.
3. Flash Card Testing?– Once a week in our EOS meetings, one lucky person is tested on a manufacturing topic. We have created several sets of flashcards covering the different riveting and forming processes, automation, and general manufacturing.

Many businesses will hand a line card and catalog to a team member and wish them luck. Orbitform has developed a culture where you want to learn more and are inspired to grow. This leads to our next article on Orbitform's ICG (Intentional Career Growth) initiative.
