How To Become A Self-Disciplined Beast

If you’re looking for a magic pill kind of solution, look elsewhere. I’ll be keeping it real here.

First of all, let’s define WHAT a self-disciplined beast is.

They’re no superhuman.

They feel exactly the same way you do.

They feel the exact same struggles and pains EVERY DAY.

The?only?thing that makes them different is that they don’t allow any of that to control?their actions.

That is what a self-disciplined beast is.

It is someone who doesn’t allow how they feel to control what they do.

A lot of people reading this right now are probably thinking that’s impossible. But hopefully, you didn’t think that.

Hopefully, you understand it’s completely within your reach. And hopefully, you even understand that becoming self-disciplined is within ANYONE’S grasp.

The reason why people think only a select few have a high level of discipline is that they assume those people don’t feel the same struggles and lazy whims as everyone else.

But they do!

Every little thing you feel that’s stopping you from doing what you need to do when you need to do it, they feel it too. 100%.

The difference is they’ve trained themselves to automatically ignore it.

They have just ignored it so many times, so regularly, and for such a long time, that it has just become?a part of their nature?to ignore it.

But it’s still tough.

Every day is.

Every day they still hear that little voice that says “Oh, just take a rest today. Who cares? You deserve it. Everyone else is lazy, but you’re not. You deserve a lazy day. Hell, a lazy week or month! Maybe even a year!

And every single day the self-disciplined beasts ignore it.

Because they know it’s a slippery slope.

You give yourself a full week and you’ll almost feel like you’ve lost the habit of self-discipline.

That’s right, it’s just a?habit. A habit like any other.

And THAT is the secret to becoming self-disciplined.

Understanding that it is a habit.

How do you pick up a new habit?

You do it every single day.

You don’t give yourself any slack. You MUST go through the initial period of extreme discomfort until the new habit becomes ingrained.

That’s why I started off this article by saying there’s no magic pill.

How can you become a self-disciplined beast?

Make a pact with yourself to be self-disciplined for (at least) the next 90 days.

If you can go 90 days being fully disciplined, by the end of it, it will become easy. It will have become natural. It will have become a part of you.

However, before you start, you need to predict everything you might do or think that will make you sabotage yourself and your goal of becoming self-disciplined.

The number one thing you need is a STRONG reason why you’re doing this.

If you try to become self-disciplined for a weak reason, like “I just want to see what it feels like”, then maybe you’ll have a couple of great weeks.

But after about 15 to 20 days, you’re just going to start constantly thinking to yourself “Dude, this sucks. This is sooo hard. Why did I start this again? Oh, that’s right. It doesn’t really matter… So, you know what? Screw this. It was an interesting experience but I’m done”.

Those thoughts are 100% GUARANTEED to come to your mind soon after you start a big challenge.

You MUST have a stronger answer ready for them.

If you read David Goggins’ book “Can’t Hurt Me”, this is exactly what he learned from his experience. In order to keep going, he had to have an answer to the question “Why am I doing this incredibly hard and uncomfortable thing?”

The next thing you need to understand is your standards will make all the difference.

Your minimum standards never allow you to lie to yourself.

If you tell yourself your minimum standard for the amount of money you have in your bank account is $5,000 but you always have only $1,000, then $1,000 is your real minimum standard.

For example, a bodybuilder’s minimum standard is having a magnific physique.

If they woke up 200lbs overweight, you bet their new life mission would be to lose all that weight as soon as possible.

However, there are plenty of people out there who are 200lbs overweight and they’re fine with it.

The ONLY difference between these two is their standards.

So, you need to elevate YOUR standards in order to become self-disciplined.

If your standards are to never fail a day of your 90-day challenge, then you’ll become a beast.

But if you allow your standards to be something like “Oh I’ll just be self-disciplined on the weekends when I’m not at work”, then good luck with that. Because you’ll need it.

Let me give you an example of how your standards can change over time:

Every single day of my life, I wake up with 1–5 tasks/goals I must complete within the day, plus my daily habits.

Nowadays, I wake up on a mission to complete them. To leave ANYTHING incomplete is absolutely unacceptable no matter what.

Because of this, sometimes when my accountability clients don’t have a perfect day because they did everything except for a quick 10–15 minute task, I just cannot comprehend why.

However, a couple of days ago I was reading the journal entry I wrote one year prior and it blew my mind:

I took a picture of my week’s tasks. I was extremely proud of myself for what I had done.

What had I accomplished? A nearly perfect week. I only didn’t do one task and I made up for it the next day.

I celebrated that “accomplishment”. That was me?last year.

But the me of this year? All he could see in that picture was that there was ONE task I had failed to do in the whole week. And it was a 10–15 minute task.

And this is what I want you to understand from this:

While the version of me from last year was proud of having had a near-perfect week, the version of me from this year sees that as the minimum to accomplish.

Not only that, but to the version of myself of this year, it is incomprehensible why I did not do that task on that day. If that were to happen now, I wouldn’t have gone to bed until everything was completed.

But last year? Well, apparently my standards weren’t as high last year.

And that’s why I told you this short story. So you understand that your standards don’t allow you to lie to yourself and they don’t let you lie about what they are.

They simply are what they are.

But they can also be changed! Upgraded. Improved upon.

So, if anything, work hard to raise your standards for yourself.

It’s not an overnight thing, but it can definitely happen in less than a year.

Gain the right habits for yourself. Sacrifice for 90 days to gain them and I promise you your life will never be the same again.

It will be a FULLY upgraded version.

Never stop hustling & never stop dreaming,

- Dez
