Step 1: Meet the Requirements for a Traditional Notary Commission

Before applying for online notarization, you must first become a traditional notary public in New Mexico. To do this:

  1. Take a training course and pass the exam.
  2. Complete the notary application form, signing the oath of office in front of a notary and having it notarized.
  3. Obtain the required $10,000 surety bond and the associated power of attorney from the bond issuer.
  4. Submit your application package to the New Mexico Secretary of State, including: Application form Surety bond and power of attorney Certificate of course and exam completion $30 application fee
  5. Register your notary stamp by submitting the Stamp Registration Form within 45 days of approval.
  6. Purchase a notary seal and journal once your commission is approved.

Step 2: Apply for Online Notary Authorization

To become an online notary:

  1. Hold a current New Mexico notary public commission.
  2. Complete and pass the Remote Online Notary (RON) Education course and exam.
  3. Submit the Remote Online Notary Application to the Secretary of State along with: Your course completion certificate A $75 application fee
  4. Obtain an electronic notary seal/stamp after approval.
  5. Register your eSeal/stamp using the Stamp Registration Form, submitted within 45 days of application approval. This form may be included with your initial application.

Step 3: Begin Online Notarization

Once authorized:

  • Set up your eNotary profile on an approved RON platform.
  • Ensure your RON platform complies with state regulations for identity verification, audio-visual recording, and secure document handling.
  • Start performing online notarizations.
