Waking up early in the morning is something I have been doing for about three years now. Also, when I say early, I mean 3:40 am to workout. After telling this to people, they often ask "how do you do that"? I got to thinking that maybe it is time to share how I became a morning person.
Workout First Thing in the Morning
Most people when they first get up have no intention of getting out of bed. Add the thought of working out, and they will probably hit the snooze button and go back to bed. I cannot tell you how important it is to work out first thing in the morning. It sets the tone for the rest of my day. I feel more positive, awake and motivated vs. days where I just go back to sleep. Also, the numerous health benefits that working out provide are second to none.
Have a Coffee or Some Form of Caffeine
Okay, so you are probably thinking there must be some secret to how he wakes up at that time? I would not really consider this a secret, but something with caffeine can get you motivated and wanting to be up. Me personally, I take a pre-workout drink. This not only wakes me up but gets me motivated and ready for the gym as well as keeping me awake all day. Moreover, in fact, I sleep 6 hours a day; you can see why I swear behind caffeine and my pre-workout. This is not a competition, of course, so if you can aim for 7-8 hours of sleep a day do it. I do make up for my less sleeping on the weekends, so that helps to offset my sleeping pattern.
??????Set a Goal or Reason to Wake up Early
I'll be the first to admit; I would not be waking up early if I did not have a reason or goal to do it. My reason is I like to workout when there are not that many people at the gym. Yours can be anything. Just make it a priority. If you have read Tony Robbins, Awaken the Giant Within, you will be familiar with the pleasure or pain of doing something. What I have done is associate such pain that if I do not wake up, it is going to ruin my day and how I feel. I know this from a fact of skipping a workout and noticing how I tend to be sadder on the days I do not workout. It might be a bit extreme, but it does the trick for me.
For those who have not read the book. Essentially you want to attach lots of pain to something that basically if you do not act on the thought or action you are missing out. This works so well because we are more afraid of not doing something or losing something than what me might gain from that thought or action.
Transition Into Waking up Early
Before I started waking up very early in the mornings, I was getting up at 6:00-6:30am each day. I did not just change my alarm to 3:40 am I transitioned to it. So generally waiting in two-week intervals then setting my alarm clock 30 mins ahead each time. It is going to be a struggle at first, but it is definitely worth the reward.
Conclusion
In closing, just remember similar to how life is a race, not a sprint, so is becoming a morning person. Do not get discouraged if you do not wake up early on some days as sometimes the body has other ideas and wants more sleep. Also, reward yourself when you do wake up early to establish new habits that will help get you to your goal of becoming a morning person.
