How to Beat Your Competition!

When I was a hiring manager, I would initiate an interview by asking the candidate, "How are you doing?"

Most candidates responded to me with, "Great, how are you?”

I would advise you to use this opportunity to expand on your day and provide some additional information. For example, you could say something like,

"It's going terrific so far. I had a quick breakfast with my family and enjoyed a nice walk to work. The weather has been lovely lately and I'm looking forward to a relaxing afternoon."

Why say something like this? ( I hear you ask)

Starting the interview in a more relaxed manner, allows the interviewer to engage with you and establish a positive tone for the interview.

As a previous hiring manager, I found that this approach resulted in a few minutes of small talk, which helped to create a stronger connection between me and the candidate.

This is a valuable tip that can make a significant difference in your interview experience.

What are your hard skills?

Hard skills refer to measurable and concrete abilities that individuals acquire through various forms of education, training, or work experience. These skills can be taught or learned and are objective.

Unlike soft skills, which are more subjective and harder to quantify, hard skills can be demonstrated and proven. In other words, either a candidate possesses the required hard skills for a particular role or they do not.

How can you enhance your CV or resume with hard skills?

When enhancing your CV or resume, it can be advantageous to emphasize the skills you have gained from past or present employment that apply to your targeted roles or field.

By showcasing these abilities, you can showcase your relevant expertise and demonstrate why you are a suitable candidate for the position.

Here are some ways to incorporate hard skills into your CV or resume:

Before writing, create a comprehensive inventory of the skills you have employed in your leadership or work experiences. You can utilize an Excel spreadsheet to categorize them according to the positions you held.

For example, if you were employed at Snapchat, you may record Zendesk, Confluence, and Jira as skills utilized in the development of Go-To-Market Strategies.

What to do next

When you have compiled a list of skills, examine the job description and search for the "minimum/preferred qualifications" section. Determine which skills you possess that align with the requirements specified in the job posting.

If your skills match the desired criteria, include them in the relevant sections of your CV or resume.

To effectively present your hard skills, provide comprehensive details for each bullet point. Rather than simply stating that you "created reports," specify the specific platform utilized to generate those reports.

An example for you

Indicate that you "generated reports using Excel and PowerPoint to perform trend analysis and competitor research, and to identify target markets."

Align the skills listed in the "Skills and Interests" section with those featured on your CV or resume to demonstrate that you have prior experience utilizing these skills.

If you have not previously employed these skills, elaborate on how you acquired or applied them, such as in a project or university or college course during your interview.
