How To Beat The Instagram Algorithm

How To Beat The Instagram Algorithm

Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms today and as such it is a valuable marketing tool for many businesses who use social media, and Instagram itself, to promote their company and products to millions of people as well as to engage with their customers and potential customers. Brand engagement on Instagram has been higher on Instagram than on other social media sites, but lately, it has been dropping as competition has increased. This has meant that more and more people on Instagram are getting their feeds full of posts and so “miss about 70% of the posts in their Instagram feed”, according to Instagram’s co-founder and chief executive, Kevin Systrom. In order to try to fix this Instragram, has taken a page from their new owner/partner, Facebook’s playbook and has instituted a new algorithm that will, according to Kevin Systrom, make “sure the 30% you see is the best 30%”.

This means that for marketers, the content you put on Instagram now has to beat out the 70% of other traffic your audience sees on Instagram (the content of which could include anything, from kittens to Taylor Swift). Sounds like a tall order, doesn’t it? So how can you beat Instagram’s new algorithm and make sure your content gets seen? Here are seven tips to help you.

1. Consistency

Consistency is key in much of online marketing, be it blogging or social media posts. Post on Instagram consistently but not too often. You don’t want to overwhelm your audience. Consistent posting will drive engagement, which will in turn, lead to Instagram showing your content more often.

2. Audience

Continue growing your audience. This can be done in a number of ways, such as following people who follow accounts that are similar to yours. Grow your audience by growing your engagement, and Instagram will show your content more, thinking your account is popular.

3. Content

Sharing good photos and exclusive content is a good way to increase your engagement by earning more likes and comments. Exclusive content could be a contest or content your audience won’t find on your brand’s other social media platforms. Sharing videos is another good way, as they tend to create more engagement than other content types.

4. Engage

Engage with your followers. Comment and like things your followers have shared to build relationships. They will return the favor. The more likes and comments a post receives, the more the account is seen as popular and will show up at the top of the feed.

5. Questions

Asking questions or taking polls are a good way to increase engagement with your followers and make sure Instagram shares your content so your posts will be seen by people.

6. Hashtags

Use relevant hashtags with your posts. They will help you reach people who aren’t following you.

7. Timing

Instagram analytics is just rolling out, but there are some basic tools, like Buffer, you can get that will let you see your stats. Use them to find out the best times to make your posts – when your posts are getting the most reactions from your followers. These times will be the best times to post.
