How is BBQ and Financial Planning similar?

Are you worried about running out of money in retirement? Are you worried that you may not have enough to retire, Are you trying to figure out WHEN to retire? People hire me to help answer these questions...
So any of you that know me know that one of my passions – actually life long passion is BBQ,??its actually not just a passion of mine I think it is safe to say that it could be seen as an obsession in many ways.???Now when many people think of BBQ. They commit the cardinal sin of thinking that GRILLING (something that I enjoy but is absolutely NOT BBQ) is BBQing.??Let me state emphatically this is just not the case.???BBQing by definition is the application of smoke at a low heat cooked slowly over time to which ever meat you are preparing.??Think Texas, Kansas City, Memphis or even Northern Alabama (more on that in a later post).??When you think of those capitals of BBQ you’re (at least mine does) mouth starts watering at the thought of consuming some brisket, ribs, burnt ends or pulled pork.??If your mouth does not water at the thought of that I’m not sure I can know you. LOL.
Real BBQ is much more than??just lighting up (or hitting the start button on a pellet smoker) your pit of choice (mine happens to be a Komodo Joe) and putting some smoking wood in the chamber and setting say a pork butt in for about 8 – 12 hours.???Real BBQ is closer to an art??with some science thrown in.???I have spent years learning the art of BBQ, studying the science of BBQ.??For instance.??Let’s talk about preparation.??What type of wood do you smoke with (depends on the flavor profile you are wanting and also on the meat you are smoking)What rub do you apply (depends on the type of meat), do you make the rub yourself or purchase a commercially available rub?. Do you inject, brine, or just mop (baste for those not in the know). How long do you leave the meat on the smoke and do you wrap midway.??If you wrap do you use butcher paper of foil (the Texas cheat. And it depends on what you are trying to accomplish).??You see for a real BBQ enthusiast it’s far more than just lighting up a bunch of charcoal and putting some smoking wood on…. For a real BBQ enthusiast this is much more of a science and the art of it is learned over time.
So how is financial planning similar you ask.??And what is the difference between a planner and a normal financial advisor or broker.???I think the difference is similar to the difference between a griller and a BBQer.??Think about it, an advisor will take your order and allocate you into a pre designed fund and you and they will watch (hopefully) your assets accumulate over time.???But a financial planner takes a scientific approach to your situation.??We will sit down and take all of the ingredients, do scientific analysis of your situation, create a plan to help you achieve your goals with the right recommendations for your individual situation and help you execute those strategies.???Financial planning is scientific, but it is also an art that is learned over time.??It all depends on what you are attempting to accomplish as to what is the right approach, and like BBQ there are different methods that are appropriate.
If you are not working with a financial planner and perhaps just want to explore your situation let me suggest that you reach out and see how a REAL (BBQ LOVING) financial planner can use the science and art of the planning process for your situation

3 年Amazing how the same tool (kamado joe in your case) can be used for so many things too. Smoking, grilling and all that falls between. Just like certain tools financially can serve multiple purposes depending on the plan
