How to Battle Your Resistance to Change

How to Battle Your Resistance to Change

Whether you are facing operational or social change in your life, you can be expected to feel some resistance to what might be next. Commonly, you might be feeling resistant because of your own self-interest, a lack of trust, a different opinion, or simply because of a low tolerance to change. These different views can change how you might approach a situation, but there are some key ways to battle your resistance to change as a whole. If you want to become a stronger leader for your team, try to implement these new ideas.?

Bump Up Communications?

A lot of resistance to change comes from not understanding why it is happening or what your part is within the change itself. The unknown can be frightening, and if you are not prioritizing communication, this fear will only help your resistance grow. It is essential to bump up communication between those who are enacting the change, yourself, and your team. When everyone is on the same page, the better the outcome can be.?

Become More Involved?

The best way to battle resistance is to throw yourself into the situation. If you want to tackle change, don’t be afraid to get involved. When you participate in the actions, you can not only better understand the what and why, but you can also become better prepared and ready for when your team inevitably asks questions. A collaborative effort will help reduce the fear and resistance to change and can lead to a more ready and accepting mindset for future changes down the road.?

Educate Yourself Further?

Similar to being involved and upping communication, you can take the extra step to educate yourself on the change. You can get even more proactive and keep up to date with new events and trends happening within your industry to see what you can expect to happen in the future. If you are well educated in what will happen, you are more likely to maneuver around change in a healthy and productive way for both yourself and your team. This will also help you trust whatever is to come. Trust is a significant factor in battling your resistance to change. When you have a strong foundation of trust built from communication and education, you will be able to take on change better than ever before.?

Find Support in Others?

The biggest thing to remember when going through change is that you do not have to do it alone. Finding support in others, such as friends, colleagues, mentors, allies, or team members, can help you talk about whatever might be holding you back from accepting and moving forward with your career. They will also provide a different perspective than your own, playing devil’s advocate, and show you that there is more than one way to look at the situation at hand. When you have this support behind you, you can confidently take on change.?

Accept the Idea of Change?

Lastly, and what I would say is most important, is accepting the idea of change as a whole. Change is inevitable. No matter what industry you are in, there will always be changes in technologies, strategies, processes, people, and markets. You will need to learn new things, adapt to new processes, and meet new people who will change your world significantly. The best way to start those journeys is by accepting they will happen. Being a leader means being prepared. This is your chance to become more prepared than ever before.

Everyone’s reasoning to resist change is different, but there are ways to battle it. If you have further questions or wish to become a stronger leader, message me!
