What I have hated more than stepping into a dog poo (I know it's gross) or noisy eaters are the formal coffee-breaks we call 'Meetings' in the so called fascist corporate regime (no I am not going overboard on that one). I mean what is the fascination in having to gulp in gratuitous insult over a cup of coffee just because you couldn't achieve the numbers though you were close to it, or because the consumers did not respond to a campaign the way marketing planned. We go to the extent of assigning nomenclatures to it Daily Meeting, Monday Meeting, Friday Update Meeting, Day End meeting and the never ending list.Meeting is used as an euphemism for killing time. It sure is!
Whether it is about achieving the sales figure or about running a successful marketing campaign it all boils down to one thing the corporate culture.
How & how much you interact with your employees, resolves almost all your problems!!
Not carrying out the morning follow up meeting everyday would save so much of the productive time early in the morning when clients are all charged up for the day or at least let the employee have his own "my time" to plan his day out.Are you trying to convince me that it is impossible to take an update from your team members sitting close by in the same office and you need a conference room to do this task better.Well in that case you need to go get your homework done.Talk more to your team, build a bond, walk up to them rather than expecting them to walk up to you just to massage that false self-centered ego.
Treat your employees the way you would expect yourself to be treated.Motivation to deliver is a product of healthy corporate culture and a strong team.It takes time to build one, just like it takes time to build a relationship. This will ease out things for you and put them into auto-pilot.You will see your team walking up to you and expressing their non-success.Again how you deal with it is what decides for you.
Meet less connect more!
That’s the answer.
More meetings create more void than connections. The very idea that more meetings would help you deliver better and bigger numbers is a misnomer.
My experience from more than a decade of working in multiple industries with varying cultures, one thing that I feel consumes considerable amount of productive time are meetings. One internal meeting at the start of the week to assimilate things and to align the team with the goals by far does the job.
Talk to your team as frequently as possible... in person, over a call guiding them through as they battle their way out.Make them so comfortable that they can walk up to you without hesitation.
Take them out for a lunch, drop them home, walk them down on your way back, be great friends go for a movie, hit the club, invite them home.
Would you require better forums where you can have more healthy, lively & open-ended discussions? Would you find better ways to build a strong team? Now do you believe there are easier and more effective ways to do better than having meetings?
Let me know your take on this!

5 年My take is, that a leader can hold the person to account only when he/she has made a connection through a consistent sessions of coaching with an intent to develop his team member. Ridiculing in front of other team members will lead to group think (may be against boss) which possibly makes things worse. Hence, a leader must strive to find the root cause first.? I think building a culture of coaching within the team will end the frustrating saga of such unproductive meetings.

6 年E mails is another one of my pet peeves now since lot of employees in US now work from home or as subcontractors. World doesn’t stop without me n I only respond to emails twice a day. My customers know now that I will get back to them within 24 hrs n resolve the issue.?
